Default Scale?

What scale is 40K on? How close it itto 28mm = 6 feet? I'm thinking of using some non-GW models and I want to make sure they'll look ok with GW stuff.

GW scale isn't very accurate 28mm can range from 5ft to 8ft, and the vehicles are, generally, of a smaller scale than infantry. So really its just a case of trial and error when it comes to making non-GW stuff look the 'correct' size to be used alongside your Army.

saying 28mm (which is more like 30mm nowadays) doesnt mean much with GW's scale

you could get a real life 1/48 (or is it 1/46? i cant remember) scale model - which is tehnically 28mm - and compare it to a GW one and youll be disgusted by the liberties they take with scale.

case in point: a human male body i 8 heads high, as in; stand 8 normal male heads on top of each other and they will form a pillar about the same height of a normal man. 8 heads. eight.

pick up any plastic GW model - say a cadian, marine, sister of battle and just look. do you see 8 heads in height? no. more like 4. insane! thats why 45mm models (=][= scale) have hands and weapons that are generally the same size as 40k ones - thats how far out the scale is!

28mm is supposed to be 1/56 scale. I have some true 1/48 scale military figs that are the same height as some GW figs. Some of the 1/48 scale tanks out now are small compared to the newest SM and CSM figs. One of these days I'll post a pic of a WW@ Russian KV2 against a Leman Russ. Not much difference.

So 1/56 scale is going to be way too small then?

I tend to stick to 1/48 to 1/35 stuff. But the best way is just trial and error and since every manufacturer is different you just have to test them out.

I'm thinking of using them as Storm Troopers for an IG army that's in it's planning stages.

As would I! Sadly, I don't think they exist. I don't think they're making any more models either since the game as a whole kind of flopped. Iwas thinking counts as Valkerie. I still might do it, but I'll have to scratch build.

Default Re: Scale?

I'll take some pics when I get a chance. I picked up a bunch of them a couple of years ago, to use as stormtroopers. They are a little taller than GW stormtroopers, and a lot skinnier, with more normal sized hands and heads. I tried using both Lasgun arms from Cadians and the lasguns with the SST arms. The GW arms are way too big at the shoulder join, and the SST hands are really small when used with the GW lasguns. GW uses what they call "28mm heroic scale" which seems to translate to big hands, big feet, big heads, chunky bodies. The SST MI Cap troopers are truer to 32-33mm, with normal looking body proportions, and they are still taller than a 1/48 scale fig. I've also tried using VOID 1.1 Viridians from their Game Box, but the VOID guys are shorter than GW, though more properly proportioned. I'll post some comparison pics when I dig the guys out of storage.

The scale differs but at least you have a reference by knowing exactly how high a space marine is. I hate it when you go into hobby shops and they say scale and I am just thinking what the hell how can you scale a human or a barrel you can get small or large.

But yer back to point the scale seems to differ for almost every single thing in this game and their isnt a fixed one.

Starship Trooper minis are roughly the same size as Imperial guard. I recently bought some and they look ok. If you be hard to use lasguns on them but i think if you use them on their own they should be fine.

I have two squads of catachan who use 1/35 scale weapons and yes the weapons are really small compared to the mini's but i did it for fun.

When it comes to vehicles it really depends on the vehicle when it comes to scale. GW vehicles are way off on scale anyways. In some cases you could use 1/48 vehicles, some cases you could use 1/35, it all depends on the vehicle you are useing.
