Default Squad Identification

Hello, I am new to these boards so first I want to give you my greetings. This seems like a real good place for 40k. I am very glade to be here. Now I have a quick question, on the TT battle field, how many players here use squad identification on each of there units. Like a color, or a number of some sort on there TT units. So they know which squads what, who belongs to what squad.

Well, for my IG Cadians I did two coloured lines on the shoulder pad. The top line is the platoon colour, and the bottom line is the squad colour. This is quite easy to do, and so you dont have to be a member ofthe 'Eavy Metal team to do it. Below is an example, where the shoulder shows it is from Red Squad, which is in Blue Paltoon.

Then, with my Space Marines, I used the standard symbols for different units and added a nummber to the middle of it. Below is a model from a squad in the troop section that belongs to squad 4.

And finally, probably the easiest one is to simply put some colour on the back of the model base to show which squad the model belongs too. I did this with my Tyranids, as you cant really paint squad markings on the actualy body. Below is a Tyranid Warrior which is part of Grey Brood (squad):

I did it at the back of the base, so you can see what squad the model is in, but it does not spoil the apperence of the model from the front (which is what the opponent can see).

Hope thats Helped!

Playing Guard squad markings are essential. It is a pity that I have been too lazy to put them on. I'm eventually going to make markings on their bayonet sheaves w/ Color for platoon and a number of stripes for the squad. Should be subtle enough not to ruin the look of the model or look tacky.
Space marines are easier for me because of the large open spaces and I can free hand really nice calligraphy style numbers.

To be honest its not something I have ever realy bothered to do because they design of most of my forces is so fluid that man A might be in squad 1 this battle but because of his armament he may be in squad 3 next battle!

Or perhaps Im just lazy (and besides all my figures know each other well enough from prolonged periods on the shelf to know whos in whos squad)!

Ironicly, for my Steel legion Army I dont have any form of squad marking. I just yell "Rank and File" and place them where they need to go.

Though I could suggest if you want. On the lip of the base of your model paint a line or something. For example take Blood red and paint a verticle line on the lip of the base. Not the actual base just that edge part. Or put a mark at the bottom of the base under the model.

Yeah I forgot to put this part in before. So Guard players and you said that you just say rank and file. What I end up doing is remembering the general area of squads and i remember casualties as they come. A bit of a pain as i need a full platoon to take some difficult ground and everyone is mashed together, then they split up later. once in a while i have a guy or two who is way off from his squad and needs to do a bit in teleportation. It's just a guy with a lasgun so my opponent doesn't really mind, just part of dealing with 100 guys being on the table.
