I started back with RT, and had space marines (like many others).
As soon as Chapter Approved came out, I switched to the pointy ears (eldar pirate army).
Been playing on and off since.

Rogue Trader but stopped soon after..it was either buy models or go hungry and where as i didn't mind losing a bit a excess the wife and child had other ideas ,so i took to a cheaper alternative (paint and paper)

I technically started when it was 2nd edition. Then my son was born and I came back to 4th edition. I missed 3rd edition completely. I still have some old chaos stuff still sitting in a box somewhere.

The best part of it all is, I played 1 game of 2nd edition.

't was in the grim dark days of of the early nineties when flannel shirts and jurassic park were all the rage! lol

as far as 40k was concerned, it was the early days of 2nd edition back when tau, necrons, sisters of battle and =][= werent even a glint in any chamber's eye; when there were just 2 or three army books and the death pangs of 1st edition were still in the air

Well For me It started when a friend of mine came into my dorm and said "whatcha doin?" I was painting a historical mini at the time, and he said "you like minis? come here i have something to show you!" Then I saw his wonderful Mordian army, all blue coats and grey pants, with black and shiney boots....and he said here take these and paint them up and I'll play you. its kinda like risk and chess" and he handed me a small Praetorian army, that he had gotten when the box set came out at the battle of Big Toof and he didn't like the models. After that just him and I playing on the pool table, until one day Nick (that guy) took me to his local store, and I bought my first NEW army space marines, which was the new style terminators (Metals), 2 squads of the BRAND NEW POSEABLE marines tatical squads and 2 rhinos the old top/bottom and 2 track ones.
I played a bit on and off after that but got back into it in 2001 from another guy named Nick when he was all hype about this new race called TAU to be released in the next year. and from here I have spent most of my disposable income on the hobby. AND I never lost my love for the Praetorians, IG, or used models!!!

3rd edition my friend jeremy let me use his ork speed freak (tear getting emotional and nestalgic) so thus the beast was borne I looked at a few different codexes and some figs ( nids IG SM ORKS) and made the decision to play gaurd. I got a box of catachin jungle fighters and a codex of my own (third edition) for my next birthday cadian shock troops for solstace. built up a playable army from there.

I started when D&D got boring in 87 or 88. RT was the coolest thing I'd ever seen. And, the Space marines were 10 for $9.99. 2 Rhinos for $19.99. Round top preds were $14.99. Still got my first Pred. Still got my first box of Beakies. And a box of Squats.

Damn, I'm gettin' old.

I started playing 40k back in the days of the Armageddon campaign.
Saw the Steel Legion, read the Codex Armageddon and well, never stopped playing Warhammer since then.

I have been playing 40K since the beginning of the 3rd edition. The starter set was dark eldar and space marines, and have been hooked since.

My father kept the space marines.

I started right when 3rd Edition came out.

At first I didnt know it was a game, and just loved the models, and wanted to build them.

I thought that Space Marines were Imperial Guard. So... I bought Space Marines thinking that I can use some serious Basilisk action lol

Then it was like 1 year later that I got into the "game" aspect and understood everything!

Cheers,
Peter

Hmm originally around 11 years ago, I don't know what edition was around then though! I bought a boxed starter set after my friend got me into it, he bought eldar I bought space marines but then we sadly lost touch with each other and I drifted away from warhammer. But the game was always gnawing at my mind beckoning me to return like a siren's call.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

i jumped into 40k right at the release of 3rd edition...

i actually had been playing fantasy for about 3 years already however. i had started to really get into the background of 40k during that time however... upon my visit to GW toronto, the manager at the time talked me out of buying the 2nd edtion box as he informed the new rules/box game would be out in about 5 weeks time!

cheers!
