| Chapter 1 Captain Joshua sat up with a start. With a swift thought he shut down his Neural Interface (NI) with the ship’s library and opened a link to the ships main computer. Images flooded into his mind, of nearby stars, of the positions of the rest of the convoy, of the ship’s communication network, the ship’s course to New Washington and of the ship’s cargo bay carrying 2000 tonnes of military grade synthesized diamond. Everything was normal so why was he so uneasy? He was about to reconnect with the artificial beach memory in the ship’s library when the proximity alarm sounded. ‘What the hell is going on?’ he shouted but it wasn’t a question, the ships sensors were sending information straight into his brain. Wormholes were opening all around them, he gasped as more and more appeared it could mean only one thing, pirates! ‘Bring the CombatDrones on line!’ he yelled, meanwhile his NI was reaching into its memory banks to pull up combat programs. He ordered the Holoscreen to display the combat programs. He fired three CombatDrones at each wormhole terminus. But even as he spoke his NI informed him of more wormhole terminuses’ opening, more than he could ever defend himself against. As his crew reached the bridge he saw the first enemy ship appear, lasers firing upon the frigate accompanying the convoy as it emerged. The next second the screen exploded in static as the frigate exploded. Realising that there was no hope Captain Joshua activated the ships self-destruct mechanism, igniting all of the Heз onboard the ship. In the few nanoseconds before the ship exploded Captain Joshua’s last thought was that at least he would take some of the unknown attackers with him. *** Five hundred light-years away an emigration official stamped out a VISA. ‘Now this allows you to leave Earth and book a passage on a starship. Now this,’ he said stamping an official looking document ‘allows you to cross the borders of the Imperium.’ He said this with an expression his face that said that he thought that the Imperium was a place where nobody from Earth should be going. The sixteen year old girl facing him clutched the documents tightly. She had been expecting cards instead of paper but then again the Imperium was fussy about the kind of documents it used. She hurried of to exchange her currency for Imperial Pounds before finding a berth. One hour later clutching her belongings she got on a flight to the asteroid settlements. As soon as she walked through the airlock onto the spaceplane she began to feel excitement rising in her, at last she was finally taking her future into her own hands, nobody could tell her what to do anymore and… Her train of thoughts were interrupted when the loud speaker blared a warning to sit down in their seats. After a brief battle with her seat straps (which was ended when a bemused steward came and helped her) she was ready for take-off. The g-force built suddenly as they took off. Then as suddenly as it had started the g-force reduced to a standard 1 g. The last of Earth’s atmosphere faded away and she gasped at the sight of the asteroids and the spaceports. The asteroids had first been brought into Earth’s orbit in 2032 when early fusion power was able to propel objects at 10% of light speed enabling asteroid mining, until someone had the idea to move the asteroids into Earth’s orbit. This would make the whole process cheaper and more cost effective as well as providing housing for the miners who would begin to start micro-gee manufacturing once the minerals had been mined. Soon Earth was surrounded by a chain of inhabited asteroids, space stations and spacedocks making Earth the greatest economic power in the solar system. Since spaceships were being manufactured by the asteroids it was only a matter of time before they became spaceports for the increasing number of commercial spaceflights. Now, after centuries of industry, the asteroids were covered with spaceports, zero-gee factories and planetary defence platforms. As the spaceplane approached a docking bay she could see huge spaceships moving into the docks, giant tankers leaving for exotic planets like New Washington and New Spain, colony ships carrying their living cargoes to the furthest reaches of the explored galaxy, small three man scout ships, the deadly cruisers of the Commonwealth Navy and… her heart skipped a beat. There sitting proudly in the dock was the most famous passenger liner ever built, the Voidsoarer. *** The Voidsoarer was the first of the great passenger liners built by ITC. Only ten were ever built and now only three remained, only one ever left the Imperium, one was used as an exclusive transport for foreign governmental representatives; the third was kept in the Imperial Spacefaring Museum with other relics of human space flight. Out of all the Ten Imperial Liners (as they had been affectionately named by their builders) the Voidsoarer was the greatest. Even in this day and age she was a testament to human space technology. She had been modelled on a hotel-come-leisure centre from the twentieth century. She had the greatest shock exorbers ever built to ensure maximum comfort for the passengers and a total of one hundred ion-beam thrusters to propel it through space at such a speed as to create artificial gravity for passengers while they were travelling through star systems. The cost to run a ship such as this was tremendous over long distances and as a result it only made tri-annual voyages to the solar system and even these rarely returned full with passengers since, despite the ending of the war several centuries ago, there were still widespread anti-imperial feelings present amongst the people of Earth. However the Imperium ensured that the Voidsoarer continued flying to Earth as a token gesture of political stability. To keep the flights viable however, they were also used for the clandestine, unofficial transportation of Imperial agents to the solar system … and occasionally people even more important. *** At that moment the Emperor of the Imperium awoke onboard the Voidsoarer. He tried to remember the dream he had just had. No, it hadn’t been a dream, he could tell by the feeling that it was an old memory that kept on repeating; he had just had another vision. There had been a girl aged about sixteen with dark brown, shoulder-length hair, a natural beauty and clearly destined to break a few hearts. She had been on a spaceplane and… it was no good he just couldn’t remember. He would have to have a check run through the asteroids security system, she would be important, he could feel that, so what did that mean? ‘Oh well.’ he sighed and, making a note in his NI, he got up. He commed the ship’s captain checking if the refuelling was on schedule. Once he learned that all was well he decided to skip breakfast and go straight to the virtual conference with the leaders of IG. ‘About time you showed up’ snapped a voice. ‘Please, please some of us have to sleep you know.’ replied the Emperor ‘We aren’t all inhuman robots.’ ‘That’s the trouble with the youngsters these days, no respect.’ said another voice. Smiles flickered on all around the conference table ‘You are in danger of being clichéd.’ snapped the Emperor. The owner of the second voice chortled at being able to nettle the Emperor so easily. ‘Old phrases are still relevant today.’ interjected a third voice. ‘And don’t I know it.’ muttered the Emperor. ‘Well to business, I assume you have all had time to consider my proposals yesterday. So I will begin by saying that I am glad that you were so willing to listen and that no one seems to have anything to add I think that we should go straight to the vote.’ A fourth voice angrily replied ‘Hold on, I still don’t understand why you need to build a station in the Oort cloud. I mean you know we aren’t going to attack you,’ ‘No you’ve never attacked us before have you,’ snapped the Emperor ‘it was just a regiment of commonwealth troops drawn from Earth who attacked us.’ ‘Calm down both of you.’ said the third voice sharply. ‘Yes Miss’ replied the Emperor meekly. Everyone laughed, and this time there was a tinge of relief in the laughter, the moment of danger had passed. The owner of the fourth voice tried to start again ‘I’m still waiting to hear Antonine’s reply’ he said, firmly using the Emperor’s first name to convey the depth of his feelings. ‘Ok,’ sighed the Emperor ‘I want to build this station so that I can collect more data for the ISA.’ A look of comprehension dawned on the faces of the conference. The ISA (Imperial Star Almanac) was known for its phenomenal accuracy and was used by almost all human worlds, with the notable exception of Mars and Europa where the planetary governments preferred to use their own. The Emperor smiled inwardly, that little white lie should do it, he hated having to deceive them but if he told them the real reason they probably wouldn’t believe him. ‘Well since the station is just for astronomical purposes then I don’t see any reason why we should veto it, do you?’ said a fifth voice, its owner looking at each member of the conference in turn receiving nods of agreement from each member. ‘Right it’s settled then and since that’s about all I really must dash.’ The Emperor said and then, with a formal bow, his image disappeared from the conference. |
