| The Emperor's Yesman ![]() ![]() ![]() | The Eisenhorn Trilogy written by Dan Abnett is a 1st person recount of events in the Helican Sub-Sector involving the Inquisition, and particularly Inquisitor Gregor Eisenhorn. When writing the book, Dan states in the Foreword that, while developing the Inquisitor specialist game, GW sent Dan all the usual fluff updates. With it came a drawing titled Inquisitor. When Dan asked Black Library if he could write about it, they said yes. Eventually, word of the book's writing reached the Inquisitor development team, and they asked GW to set Dan a deadline. That deadline was the date of the Inquisitor board game. Dan himself says it was to make everyone look big and smart. Indeed, the first book, Xenos, was released simultaneously with the board game. To read the review properly, highlight the text. ++Warning: Spoiler Start++ Xenos In Xenos, Inquisitor Gregor Eisenhorn is in his forties. Middle-aged by normal standards, young by Inquisitorial stnadards. For the last 6 years he has chased the heretic Eyclone through the Galaxy, and has finally cornered him in a hibernation chamber on Hubris. Though Eyclone is killed, over a thousand of the Hubrisian Noble elite die of hibernation sickness. On Hubris, however, he finds Chastener Godwyn Fischig of the Adeptus Arbites. He is assigned to accompany Eisenhorn in wake of the genocide as an assurance. The pair, along with Eisenhorn's pilot, Midas Betancore, of Glavia, his savant, Uber Aemos, and his Astropath, Lowink, go on a search for Eyclone's hirer. They find someone connected to the organisation on Hubris, and eliminate him (after interrogation). While there, however, they come across Alizebeth Bequin, an untouchable. The group discover that the crime is connected to a guild on the world of Gurdrun, and so they leave for the planet. __________________________________________________ ___________ Update coming soon.

| Extremis Diabolus ![]() ![]() ![]() | I enjoyed this book more than any other Warhammer 40k book I have read, and it is quite possibly my favorite book of all time. It made me buy an Inquisitor just to have one and make a story for him. Dan Abnett has put together one heck of a plot and the 40k universe takes on a whole new light. 40k is already dark and mysterious, but Abnett somehows makes it seem even more so. His descriptions make it baroque and often foreboding. I especially enjoy how he write about Eisenhorn, and how he goes from an Inquisitor who has the strength of will to burn a book of great knowledge and power even as it calls to his very soul, to using a daemonhost and keeping another unholy tome. Abnett made me feel the character Eisenhorn and when he uses Cherubael to destroy the Titan, I found myself thinking "No, Eisenhorn, don't do it!" I also enjoy Abnett's witty remarks in the book. They were few and far between, but they were fantastic. For example, then he bursts in, armed, on Madea Bentacore while she is getting a midnight snack: "It was then that I realized I had lost the towel when I kicked in the door. I was what Midas Bentacore would call 'very naked'. Except, of course, for my loaded gun." Genius! As I have recommended over and over again, everyone must read the Eisenhorn omnibus. The book is simply amazing.

| It is a must read for anyone involved in 40k. I also found myself screaming 'NO YOU HERETIC FOOL' during the battle with the titan. It actually reveled to me how so many devoties of the Throne can be so comsumed by chaos. Until the book I never understood how people became traitors so easily.

Blog Entries: 3 | I'm still reading XENOS, and moving own to the next two books.. All I have say is Eisenhorn is one bada$$ inquisitor and Abnetts style, writing, and plot is by far the best I've ever encounted. The other book I enjoyed to this was Horus Rising, by abnett himself too.

| Ah Xenos. My personal favorite. He and his retinue are much more likable characters than in the other two books.

| Extremis Diabolus ![]() ![]() ![]() | I think the change of characters also represents Eisenhorn's changing views. The newer characters don't challenge his radicalism as much (except for Fischig, of course), and this represents the fact that he is conscious, to some extent of his changing methods. They are not as likeable because of Eisenhorn's change. They have to be a bit loose and not as deep to accept the radicalism.

| His changing views were brought about by his own stubborness. He damned himself by the methods he used to recapture Cherubael. He should have destroyed the Maleus Codicium straight away like he did with the Necrotauch. And to hell with the Daemon. Why he didn't destroy Pontius Glaw in Xenos is beyond me too. Stubborness again I suppose. Look at the way that ended up.

| The pontius made an appearence in all three books. His mind was trapped in a metal object in Xenos. Same again in Malleus. Eisenhorn gave him a body in Hereticus (well, the end of Malleus)

Blog Entries: 3 | As you have seen via my review for the e-zine, and my own suggestions, I love the book. I'm very much an analytical type person, so I agree and find myself sympathizing with Gregor a lot (we share a lot of traits). However, I hate that Midas died. He was one of my favorite guys! |

| Yeah Midas Bentacore was great. He was the only person (apart from Fishig) who could tell Gregor to simply shut up, sit the f**k down and let me fly the cutter. Was there ever a short story detailing his death? All we're told in Maellus is that Madame something-or-other killed him (it was madame bedlam wasn't it). Still though, Medea wasn't a bad character, not as good as her father though.

| The Emperor's Mercy ![]() ![]() ![]() | oh not nearly. medea was cool and all, but dang, midas was freakin awesome.. sad though, how the book ends..but it's got a lot of great leads into the ravenor series, like nayl & kara, both of whom are awesome characters in themselves! aemos was pretty cool too. i guess i'm sayig that i was really surprised. originally i thought BL books might be lame and corny, like some of the OTHER game book [cough halo cough starcraft lol] but no, abnett really spun a great series..he really is talented. and his character development is ace :] yea in short...it was an amazing book/books/omnibus. lol :]

| The Ravenor series is great too (curses...Ravenor Rouge not out 'til Jan08) Abnett has been linking his 40k novels together in small ways for years, creating tiny refrences hidden in the plotlines Like you said, Nayl and Kara are carried over from Eisenhorn. In First and Only, gaunt made a refrence to The Spheres of Longing, a book wrote by ravenor, but ravenor's character only appeared in Maellus several years after First and Only was published. Basicly what I'm saying is Abnett is a bloody genius.

| Sergeant ![]() | It was a surprise that Midias was dead, but it was great the way he subtly introduced Medea. The chappy at the start of the third book inside the Warhound titan is the one who killed Midias. Fischigs end was quite fitting really. Sad, but appropriate. EDIT: That diorama sold out about five years ago when it first came out! there was one on ebay recently tho, sold at about £42 i think.

| What??? Those fools in the shop told me it wasn't out until january... Slams a fresh size 3 cell into his lasgun ...I have to...Talk...to some people. I have noticed that Abnett likes to give a lot of characters an unusually long life span before killing off (or as good as) loads of them in one go. Bequin, Aemos, Fishig, Maxilla, all of them around since the start of Xenos, we're all disposed of within a few chapters of each other. And in The Guns Of Tanith... Doyl, Bragg and Kolea were killed off (or as good as) in the space of one chapter, and Bragg had been a main character for the whole series.

| The Emperor's Mercy ![]() ![]() ![]() | BRAGG DIES? NOOOOOOOOOO haha i was about to pick up the saint actually, from the GG series, but i didn't have enough money XD yea it's kinda true though, but when you're an author and you KNOW people love your characters, sometimes you just want to keep them around to help your readers out a bit, you know ? :]

Blog Entries: 4 | Actually, when an author invests that much effort in characters, but shows that he/she is not afraid to kill them off at any point, it makes the story, and the characters more compelling, as you aprreciate the characters more while they are there.

| Sergeant ![]() | We should perhaps set aside a different sub-board for discussion of books that have BEEN READ. Like on the Black Library forum, to stop things being mentioned in the wrong places to people who havn't yet read the book in question. At the end of Eisenhorn it is unclear what state Bequin is in, though we can presume that she is still on life support at the time the trilogy ends, for we would definatly know if she had died before the end of the book. Gaunts Ghosts is excellent in the way Abnett manages to coldly kill off character(s) when you least expect it, or have them all survive when you were 100% sure they were doomed. I've got one character for you to really watch out for r4wr89 - Elijah Fething Cuu (as he is often refered to in the books in fact). Small Tr |
