Default to kroot or not to kroot

I have a Tau army that i was really hoping would be just pruestrain Tau but after reading alot of forums i'm seeing that people use kroot alot and they are effective.

Are they really worth it?

they have never killed their points worth in any games i ever fielded them in EVER
so i stopped fiekding them after 12 or so battles
i go pure tau i have some human auxillary but neverfield them either
why send our lasguns when teh pulse rifle is the best basic trooper weapon in the game period

I've been saying this, but all i hear is put them in some forest and they'll kill. Keep them back as a last resort to bring to the front if tau are being assaulted. Moderately better Close combat, shields your tau (they're cheaper so can be sacrficied easier).

Also i'v ebeen reading never assault with them. Attacking is a bad idea

Can someone explain me their armor save with a shaper though? If it's good or not

The armour rule used to be different and it affected the kroot squads leadership.
Basicly, give them armour, make the more expensive so they got +1 Ld.

Now just including the Shaper gives you the Ld upgrade and if you want you can buy the rest of the kroot a 6+ armour save just like equipping frag grenades or something.

Their multiple attacks make them a decent counter assault force against lower class troops like IG but against tougher opponents the kroot will get slaughtered.

See, if the Kroot are supposed to be "speed bumps" I would hope they'd be able to assault decently... example being... if I've got Firewarriors who're soon going to be besieged by superior enemies in close combat, I should be able to pull my Kroot out of a nearby forest, have them charge/assault and be able to hold the enemy for a turn or two. But no, they don't do that. Basically, they're good for soaking up damage and giving your opponent some cheap points. Thankfully, it's not TOO many points. But I'd like to have guys in my army for something other then dying so my other guys live.

Personally, I'd take 20 kroot in my mech army, or static force. Its enough to do damage and soak up some, while the rest of my army runs away.

It won't 'gain' points back, but it will hinder some and provide a slight defensive tactical usage.

I suppose... I'm willing to keep giving them another try, but those hounds I bought just piss me off.

Oh hounds... I would only take them if you want to 'max' out the squad.

Don't forget, kroot rifles give 1+ to attack. So difference between Kroot Warrior vs Hounds? Points, and initiative.

In trade for a gun.

I'd take the gun.

BTW - you think you can help me by PMin'g or posting comments on ANY tau unit in the game? I'll include credit. I am developing this article that gives you full rundown on tau.

[TACTICA] Tau Unit Overview

Heh.

Lets put together something. We want it to be UNBIASED, and as much FACTUAL as possible.

Yeah, I wasn't too pleased with their "contribution". More then likely, my Kroot just aren't being used effectively enough. But hey, it gives me time to refine my list while Seath refines his Eldar.

Just put together the kroot article and place it into a new post. Sure this is discussion, but we can put articles and sticky it onto the Tau forums =P
