MacCragge will give you a few minis and a working knowledge of the game mechanics. You can pick it up on eBay for lower than MSRP usually.

Tau??? too bad. ha ha ha jk

What these guys have said already is right. (well not Gregor's 'subtle' mocking of the Tau) I really would suggest you pick up a Tau battleforce as it's one of the few battleforces available that contains an entire legal army (your minimum requirements are 1HQ and 2Troops) most dont have a HQ included, though the Space Marines and their Chaotic counterparts can have a HQ created/converted from the all the bits in the battlefield box.

If theres a GW/gaming club near you i'd recommend visiting and seeing if you can borrow one of the store's small armies to play a game, see if you actually like the way Tau play and if they suit your playing style.
Playing Styles can vary so much that its important to get the army that suits you rather than try to force yourself to play an army that you dont find a laugh to battle with. I personally play Space Marines because im a terrible general but Marines are forgiving enough to look past that (as long as your opponent isn't a fearsome veteran) though SM dont generally excell in any one area without having to except a number of disadvantages.

Tau on the other hand are the closest thing in 40K to modern warfare (i know IG would seem like the ideal example but stay with me). They operate in squads rather than huge platoons, they emphasise rapid response and combined arms rather than static firing lines (theres more but i just saw the clock and it was my bed time 3hrs ago). I've generalised and rambled but i hope i've been some help.

here's a link to gw australia that might get ya started. somewhere in there is a list of stores. find one that's relatively close and visit it. talk with the staff who'll be able to help, even if it's an independant stockist.

Nah, 11 is a good age to start! If younger kids can pick up complicated "stack mechanics" and eratta of Magic... this should be no problem.

Besides start painting and converting now.. (dont be discouraged, your first pieces will most likely not be that hot. It does take practice! And youve definatly hit the right site for tips) and by the time youre old enough to drive, you could be making $$$ painting for others!

Always remember: HAVE FUN WITH IT!!!

Noooooooo! go SM! BAD FISHY!

A good way to check actually is to call GW customer service. If the store is closed, the blokes are nice enough they'll actually give you the listing of all stores within a certain mile/time away radius.

Imho, the most important thing for you to do is somehow borrow an army and play a couple of games before you decide anything

Tau are excellent at shooting, but not good at most other things (for the most part, don't even think about close combat)

Marines are good all rounders, and are hard to kill too.
They'd be good for beginners but you don't get the chance to use some specialised tactics, like Mechanised Tau using Fish Of Fury.

I'd suggest you start with a simpler army than Tau to begin with (Though not exactly the most complicated army ruleswise, they're hard for beginners to pick up. I've seen it. It's painful.)

Marines or Chaos are a good place to start. Marines are a very easy starting army to use, especially with the Battle For Macragge beginner's box-set. It'll set you up with some paints and a small lot of minis, including Tyranids which are an extremely fun army!

Well, don't entirely discourage him from doing Tau.
I've seen some pretty successful beginners with Tau.
Plus, there are just WAY too many Marines and CSM out there...
FARRRRRRRR too overplayed.

I would say Inquisition is definitely not a good starting point though, and for reasons not the least of which is that it's uber-expensive. (5 Grey Knights in Power Armour are as much as a land raider)

Assembly: pretty easy, though I've seen a few people mess up with the glowy-stick due to fogging/painting.
Necrons opinion: Personally I don't like them, but to each their own. (WARSCYTHES ARE NASTY!)

being pretty new at this as well i just thought someone should tell you not to jump in to fast. Build your army steadly (no Need for 2000 points on your second game), take your time painting (you'll feel better about an army you took your time on) and don't forget to have fun with it!

Agrees with Battle-Ranch
especially on the take your time building your army part.
Why?
because if you start slowly (with core 500pts block) you can switch easier to another army if you don't like the current.

From what i know of their rules they seem to be a bit 2D... but, they are amazignly hard...

Another thing is I have heard that they have the problem of needing to stay within rapid fire range, but out of assault... which is a bit hard... considering assault range IS rapid fire range...

Oh, and if you want to buy Mcragge (GOOD BUY!) I would suggest playing the tyranids... they are totally awesome. Their models are a bit weird, but they have some of the most brutal CC warriors... hormagaunts can be in assault by turn one (though you need a 6 to do so...), the Broodlord is THE MOST FREAKING SCARY CC
