It`s a gaming style thing

Ikky (like my evil twin brother) is a powergamer you might not be.

ICs (independed characters) are FUN, dunno why, but seeing one mini kill so many more is fun

Plus they`re easier to manage on the field (like hiding behind something and so on).

Shadowsun in particular is quite nifty

I say go for it, if you like tau and the game as a whole you`ll enjoy playing with your little army

Um, I've said before that I don't intend her to be a dedicated "tank hunter" unit. All I did was express my view of what I had in my army, since you were asking people about what to start with. I don't necessarily worry about "keeping costs low" since I don't play "professionally" or "competitively". I play with a guy who's got three armies. Two fairly sizeable tyrannid/sisters of battle armies, and his "handicap" armor of Eldar.... my Tau force is never going to be "in danger" of "running over".

Tactically, I'm sure Ikarus "knows better" then I do. Frankly, I don't care. I play Shadowsun because I like her. I didn't know my opinion was being compared to the admin's... I wasn't intending for this to be "he knows better" or "I know better". I'm sure he's got plenty of experience. I was just sharing mine.

Its all personal choice and flavor.

My way is not 'RIGHT', there isn't a right way to make any army.
Just my oppinion that I like using-

I dont 'know better'.


I am experienced, however i would never put myself as that.
Its all about fun anyways~

Quite a bit, actually. It's saved my bacon many times. I think the ability to get out of close combat in a weak close combat army is an amazing asset, especially when it's your HQ.

Yeah Ikarus was telling me how deadly fusion is. Well right now i already got the crisis commander on order, so after i play around i think i'll try shadowsun.

You can put those retroactive thrusters on the crisis commander too though i think

I THINK you can. I believe it's only for ONE unit, and that unit has to be an HQ, I think. It's a special armory item.

when i field shadow sun i put her in a stealth suit squad
and let them hunt tank/heavy infantry
it works out real good
i tried the let the tanks do that
but most people hide their tanks from the hammerheads
and concentrate fire on them
my hammer heads usually die rather early
once they bite the dust you still need something to hunt armour
and those fusion guns are real nasty

Yeah, I find myself keeping her near them quite frequently. They're a good as flexible bodyguards, especially when paired with markerlights and the ordinance from devilfish/hammerheads/crisis teams/broadsides.

believe it or not
i dont like broadsides
they draw way way too much fire for a non vehicle
so i use for my heavy choices
1 hammer head
1 ion head
2-3 sniper teams(i love these things)

but i agree shadowsun with stealth suits is very deadly

Hmmm, what's your setup on the stealth suits? I've heard stealth suits are usually an annoyance and not a big target. But the way you guys are using them sounds very fun. Make the enemy underestimate them

I guess i'll pick some up from ikarus just to use later

what guns (including markerlights) and what type of stealth suit do you use. This is sounding real good. Using decoys and scaring the enemy sounds fun!


btw what's with everyone saying whirwinds are evil against tau?

whirl wind = dead tau under a template
it is kind of fun to field a 6 man stealth squad with 2 fusion guns and targeting arrays on them all to increase their BS
then attach shadow sun to them
and they all have the stealth suit ability
you can really work your way close to your prey
and its 4 fusion blasters
(her 2 and the 2 from the squad)
and 4 burst cannons
(12 s5 shots at 4 bs)
you can kill some stuff with this setup
but it will only work on an opponent once
they will remember what happened
ive taken out a complete tactical squad with this set up in one round
(4 instakills 6/12 bas saves)

and drive them into the firing lane of you other weapons

a reactive enemy not proactive

its kind of hard to explain with out a table in front of me but i will try

1 in the first game they will be unsuspecting and get hit while they are concentrating on you tanks and stuff

2 when they play you with the same setup again they will put shots toward shadowsun and her friends while tryng to stay out of range of her weaponry
when they do this you are able to better manouver your hammer heads into better positions
so you get them cought with a choice to make
and force them to reeact to your moves not the other way around
and you are able to stay aggressive
its an aggressive strategy but it has worked well for me
might not for others

but my goal in any 40k battle is to get my opponent to react not be the aggressor
back in football we called it a gameplan

That's awesome. Really cool plan. Can she bring shield drones in stealth? Also how good are the stealth suits as bodyguards?

At first i thought stealth suits would just be an annoyance to an enemy to distract them, but this seems to really beef them up.

Well that's... horse pucky. She DOES say that "she can't select additional items", but then lower down she counts as a 1+ fire commander and no other unit may select the same special gear from the armory, it implies (erroneously) that she somehow can select items off said list BECAUSE she doesn't HAVE any of the items in her stats, only a couple enhanced things.

Solution? To heck with her. I'll make a 1+ Fire Commander Crisis Suit, give him a shield generator/fusion blaster/missile pod/vectored retro thrust nozzles and have basically the same thing. A 1+ FC has better stats then her anyways.
