Default tyranids, a formideble enemy, or just overlooked?

Hey guys,

yesterday i found myself in a battle with a tyranid army, me and my khornate army overlooked them and ended up with a beating, the zoanthropes went down easy but the waves or hormogaunts and termageants were endless, and the carnifex and raveners wreaked havoc through my ranks, i never knew they could be such a formidable enemy they were all over me(and they got some lucky dice rolls)

they gave me such a whopping we didnt need to add up points!

so what you think, are they a strong enemy, this was my first battle involving nids, i think niddies are often overlooked as a mutant race with body parts stuck together wrong!

i Will tomorrow. but some old ones are up on this site. How ever i will tell you this Zoanthropes are very deadly if played right, but the key word is "RIGHT" you have to save them for the right moment.

Army-composition wise.... I love the nids more than any other army out there! I love the Hive Tyrant, Broodlord, genestealers, fexs and gaunts of all kinds!

I don't play them because I could never figure out how to paint them properly!

So yes... the nids are amazing! If done right they will tear you up so easily!

scary 'nids:
- gaunts of all types: they're fast, come in large numbers and are dirt cheap troops! from the lowly spinegaunt who's cheaper than a guardsman or ork, to the beefy hormagaunt how's twice the pts of a spinegaunt... the shooty ones can take from a variety of nasty 'living ammo' guns, while the hormagaunts are the game's best cheap assault unit due to their amazing speed!

- gargoyles: fast, can still fleet and come equiped with bio-plasma. a skimmer's nightmare as they get hit on 4's and the S4 can rip into the rear armour of any non-super heavy skimmer out there!

- ripper swarms: dirt cheap, fearless and can be given either leaping or wings to increase their speed. sure they can't hold objectives and get pasted by any template/blast weapon... but with multiple wounds + attacks per base combined with fearless, they'll hold up the best assault units for a turn or two!

nightmarish bugs:
- ravenors: fast, can take rending claws and multiple wounds... oddly enough, space marines come in nicely sealed cans which they can easily open!

- genestealers: the classic '****, it's a tyranid!' architype. everyone fears them, and thus, they get alot of enemy attention. sometimes far too much and though your 'stealers will die hungry, the rest of your gribblies will feast well!

- biovores: annoying as hell! indirect fire weapons are good fun - especially when you can bring along the ap3 kind! oh, and missing your target isn't a problem for this guy as the bio-bombs will simply float about and still annoy your opponent!

terrifying brain bugs:
- warriors: insanely adaptable. can be tooled out to fullfill any combat role, however my favourite still has to be the good 'ol reliable huntsman species with it's devourer + rending claws, toxin sacs, 'I' glands, enhanced senses & carapace upgrades... 4 shots/bug at S3 with re-rolls to-wound and handy MEQ can-opening ability in combat!
or else flying warriors, or leaping warriors kitted out for assault!
best of all, they're synapse creatures so large broods pay-off as it will take alot of firepower to whittle then down as they can't be instantly pasted by the biggest guns!

- broodlord: papa genestealer who can infiltrate and bring along a big brood of his best mates for the ride! 'nuf said!!!

- zoanthrope: looks weak, untill it shoots a nice S10 ap2 bolt into say, your land raider or terminator lord!
oh, and he can also become a synapse bug if you'd like!

'oh hell & run the other way' death gribblies:
- carnifex: he's big, he's got an attitude, he's got big guns and a small brain! he's as tough as a tank, can go toe-to-toe with pretty much anything in combat and still emerge triumphant!
too bad his only real weakness is his slow speed...

- hive tyrant: the nastiest bug of 'em all... personally, the worst thing for any opponent to face is the 'dakka flyrant' w/2x twin-linked devourers + toxin sacs & enhanced senses. for those who don't know, that's 12! (yes, 12), S5 ap5 shots that re-roll both missed to-hit + to-wound rolls... even MEQs won't stand in front of that for too long.

so there you go, why tyranids are dead scary!

cheers!

Wow your army looks exactly like mine, i literally have the 3rd ed flyrant, everything except more genestealers and 2 less ravaners and 3 less tyrant guards (which i hope to get soon for my gunrant). I may have more gaunts. I would love to see a game where we could combine our forces and play a 2v2 game. Tyranid wave of bodies ftw!

yeah i first started with tyranids, and they are disgustingly good. you can have a carnifex that never dies (being 5 wounds toughness 7 with a 2+ save and regenerate) with a twin linked s8 pinning large blast or a twin linked s10 gun. they really are better than tanks. also you can make the fex an elite to tear things up in combat. warriors are good for everything, hormagaunts stop anything stupid enough to be too close from shooting (the bugs only real weakness) and you can have the flying hive tyrant wreck almost any tank no problem. if you play a bug commander who knows what he's doing just run away and pray to the dice gods.

The thing with 'Nids is, they WILL outnumber you. Never ever think you can match them, because you can't. You run into the problem of so many targets rushing you at once, you don't know what to take out first... You focus on the 'Fex, and the Gaunts are on you. You ignore the Genestealers, and their rending will absolutely tear you to pieces. Zoanthropes can be a pain, but are manageable. The main problem with facing bugs is numbers.

yeah for 192 points you can have 32 tarmagents that hit on 4s and have s4 guns that reroll wounds. yeah they die fast but they fleet if you aren't in range and if ignored they are a huge problem, even for space marines.

I do not think they are that scary. they do not have, as a rule, a lot of things on the field with high toughness. a lot of flamers and a few lascannons or autocannons and a sniper squad and there toast. I use two hellhounds 10 ratling snipers and a flamer in all of my 14 squads a few heavy bolters and three russes. I find if I use a firing line formation and get the fire out early I own nids all day
