Default Basing

I usually just base my mini's with grass and dirt but i was wondering if other people mix it up. Do you use both grass and dirt and urban settings in the same squad?

I'm a stickler for uniformity and I do a lot of assembly line painting to get things done so I don't usually mix two different kinds of bases into the same army and I rarely have time for scenic basing. Once I get some things out of the way I'm going to be all about it though.

i base all my minis with the same technique but i like painting the sand i use. ( which some people dont like but i dont care ). like for my space marines depending on the army for example when i do UM i use pretty much all shades of brown, but when i do my salamanders theres green and brown in it. when i do my death guard i make it snow themed to contrast the dirty decay since white is so clean. but the exception is my alpha legion the base i use for those are industrial. which i use a diamond plate sheet styrene

WEll Guardsman has a point BUT my answer is yes! I base the urban Plastic pieces and use dirt as a filler. I then paint it in greys. after that I "dirty" the entire base with super thin charred brown, and let some pool around the urban ruins/wreck. I then use grass sparingly to give the illusion that it has been there for a while and the grass is overgrowing it.

I usually make my entire list uniform with bases. The only time I vary the bases squad to squad is to identify different squads. ie. One squad has more gravel and another has more grass. But I still keep the same theme through out.

I did a fantasy unit once and based the unit as if it were at the edge of a swampy pond (one side of the unit had water and as it went into the unit it became more wet grass to marsh grass) That work for fantasy where you have blocks of minis. In a skirmish style game like 40k, I tend not to do that, it breaks the unit coherency.

Just my 2cents.

all the years ive played and painted i have never bassed an army lol nor have i ever accualy finished painting one lol but thats a diferent thread alltogether. but im gettin ready to bace my curent army and i would have to say that they should be unform style threw the army , but you can add things to spice it up or like evil said to destingquish individual squads. like adding water effect pudles for one squad, or skulls or rubble or shrubbery to another, wile keeping the uniform woods/urban/ watever your using, threw the whole of the army.

I nick the marble counter top samples from home depot, cut out a base size, and glue it on top for a marble looking floor. I've been thinking of scoring it and putting in gold 'line' to make it look tiled. Simple, very nice, and costs little. There is supposedly a peel off veneer, but I couldn't find it in lowes last time I went.

For anyone who uses dirt as part of their base, I have a really easy suggestion for collecting their supplies. I have friends who just go and buy theirs all the time. I suggest going to the end of your driveway or near a sewer drain. Get the sand/dirt that has been washed down to the very end. Its usually the most "filtered" and is usually perfect size for basing minis. Looks great on a base too. I will post a pic where I find mine at if I didnt explain good enough...
