Default Foundation Paints

Just wanted to get you opinions on GW's foundation paints, and if you use them as some of your armies main color scheme. My army I am very conflicted in which paint scheme to go with and I was looking at the foundation paints and saw some that I like especially the Adeptus battle Grey. I just wanted to get some of your opinions.

to me they are not worth the cost
when i can go to walmart and buy
high pigment apple barrel or any other generic acrylic for 44 cents to a dollar
which is just as good if not better then the foundation paints
just remember with either one to use lots of water

cost aside, i think theyre much better than GWs normal colours and the actual colours are far more realistic than the normal range and almost use them exclusively. though i get mine for free as part payment for my commissions

I loved them to start with, but am going off them! They are to thick, and they dont thin very well either as the pigment seems to go funny (and not in a ha ha way!)

i know what you mean - it goes all balck, but its nothing a bit of mixing up wont finx.

i suggest a wet pallette and/or retarder to keep the foundation paints wet.

Apple barrel paints sound hard to work with. Is it diffucult to thin and everything

Anyways my friend absolutely loves GW foundation paints, and has even won a paintning comp at my local store (biggggg area, bay area so not like middle of america)

I think the foundation paints are too expensive and don't work any better than any other paint I have used. Local craft stores around here like A.C Moore, sell Delta Ceramcoat, an acrylic paint in hundreds of colors and they are only .70 a bottle for 2 full oz. You must always add water when you are painting with any of these paints. But they work as well as GW paints.

I work with Apple Barrell/ Delta Creamcoat and have had no probs ever. My preference is my Vallejo Gamecolor and I use it often. As far as GW foundation paints I have never used them as I fing GW prices outragous and the paint pots difficult to work with. I save no money with Vallejo over GW BUT the ease of the droppers makes it worth my time!!!

I was thinking of using a metallic for my Amry scheme, like Boltgun Metal, but I was thinking will the Metallic take away from the skill, for example highlighting, or places that have more light shining on it, and weathering etc...?

the high pigment content of the generic acrylics
makes them more valuable
since you have to thin out any model paint you get to apply it consistantly
and the low price means you can use your color wheel more effectively
i like to experiment till i find the right color
i could mix 3 full 2 oz bottles and be out of pocket a buck fifty
hell the 8 oz bottle is only $1.67
i buy the white and black in 8oz buz i use alot of those 2 for mixing

I would advise against metallics in an airbrush, but that's just me

In general, regular GW/acrylic paints are NOT meant for an airbrush and will tear it up severely.

Hey guys (gals?)! I've use everything from vallejo color to GW foundation paints, and a few choice others, as well. Some paints work better than others depending upon the application. I usually prefer the higher end acrylics that are designed for miniature painting, but I have also been known to dip into my Liquitex tube acrylics (and even my tattoo ink) on occasion, to acheive some effects. Experiment a little and you'll see what I mean!

As far as airbrushing, I use a 50/50 combination of distilled water and window cleaner or distilled alcohol to thin my paint and have had no problems with solid colors or metalics. Just remember to run some of the thinner mixture through the airbrush occasionally, to keep it cleaned out. My personal favorite 'rig' is a Paasche VL (with a 1 or a 3 tip/needle, as I've found the 5 is a bit too big for anything other than basecoating), hooked to an oiless compressor w/tank & watertrap at around 15 - 20lbs of pressure.

I just read all of that and realized that if you don't have general working knowledge of airbrushing, it probably doesn't make much sense, so if any of you have questions, feel free to hit me up and I'll happily answer them to the best of my ability!

When you mean Higher End Acrylics - would you be talking about Vallejo?

Do you use model color or game color?

I have vallejo atm, but wanted to see what you paint your stuff in.

A lot of what I use depends on what I'm trying to do. I like GW stuff for base coats, then I'll use my Vallejo Gaming Color to highlight and do details. For most metallic parts, I MUCH prefer GW's stuff, once again, highlighted with Vallejo. Quite a few of the Vallejo Model Colors that I have tried were a little odd to work with at first, but after a little trial & error, they now have thier place in my bag of tricks. Acrylic extender has been worth it's weight in gold for quite a few projects also. Liquitex is an acrylic paint, usually purchased in a tube. I don't recommend jumping into it, unless you have a lot money, as it is pretty expensive ($5 - 12.00 per tube depending on color), as well as being VERY thick, although for absolutely brilliant colors, you can't beat it!
