Default How many TT players here paint unassembled Pieces first?

How many people here have ever tried painting the pieces first and then glueing them together? I have never tried it and I am thinking it might be easier to get in all areas of the model.

it depends on the model really. with some things, like land raiders and rhino's, a lot of people like to paint the interiors, which means painting them in sub-assemblies.

with non-vehicle models, i wouldnt recomend it unless its a large model with lots of parts sticking out (lke tyranid monsters, dragons, shaggoths, greater daemons etc). anythi smaller than that can be painted in one piece, though painting things like shields seperately means you can paint the whole model

generally if youre painting models purely to game with, just paint them in one part. i only paint models in sections when im painting a commission for someone or am really trying to get the best job i can on it.

also, please dont paint things while on the sprue. its a waste of time (unless theyre vehicle tracks or shields). i know people whove painted entire marine armies while still on the sprue - disaster!

and never base a model before glueing the model onto the base - it wont stick. if you dont want sand touching the side of the foot, either glue the model onto struts of plasticard or pin it to the base 'foating' a millimetre or so above the base so the sand doesnt touch it, but never glue a model onto sand - itll break off in half an hour, i guarantee it.

well i wouldn't advocate painting an entire piece on the frame but i do recomend undercoating while still on the sprue. it sorts out all those hard to reach places nicely, especially if the model is very complex. then just stick it together when the spray has dried and paint as normal.

ive only done it for my deamon prince, 3 carnifexes, and hive tyrant. basing before glueing the model down is fine if you leave a space for the feet. otherwise, as DC said, it will break off easily.

I'm painting all my new IG models before assembling them. It's an army I'm making purely to paint, so it's imperative that I get it looking good. I spend ages on each model, but it's worth it in the end.

i honestly dont know how you can paint models on the sprues. i find the sprues get in the way of the painting more than an assembled model does and the amount of touching up you have to do to the model after you snip it off th sprue makes it more hassle that its worth.

and if youre serious about painting the models as best you can dont you think its best you highlight the model once its assembled? otherwise your lighting will differ from body part to body part, and thatll look a bit strange

plus theres nothing that'll spoil a good paint job like th ewhite residue left by superglue, as anyone whos had a mini break after putting the finishing touched to it will tell you.

plastic glue doesnt leave that residue behind, but it will melt the plastic were it touches so keeping it off of the painted portion would be tricky

I paint unassembled pieces first depending on the model, but I usually paint them first so that if I assemble it and it looks hard to paint, I don't need worry.

i just realized:
i dont assemble my sisters of battle before i paint them. sure, you might say that sisters of battle only have to glue on the backpack, but the backpack does interfere with the head and shoulderpads. so i dont glue on the backpacks. big deal i know...

lol!

its true though.even just not gluing the weapon (like a bolter on a marine or the lasgun on a cadian) makes a huge difference to what you can/cant paint.
