| okay, to prevent a massive amount of "how do i paint colour x", i figured i'd start up this little index/how-to guide on how myself and others paint various colours! hopefully this can be stickied so it won't get lost. ![]() anyways, here's some of my methods for harder colours; Yellow: method 1; bright yellow a) over a white undercoat, wash the area with watered down blazing orange b) apply a layer of golden yellow to all the raised areas c) highlight wre applicable with sunburst yellow d) highlight the most extream areas with a 50/50 mix of sunburst yellow & bleached bone method 2; battle worn/darker yellow a) over a black undercoat, paint an even layer of snakebite leather. apply thinner, multiple coats to ensure even coverage and avoid streaks... b) basecoat with a 60/40 mix of golden yellow & flesh ink c) highlight with golden yellow d) extream highlight with sunburst yellow method 3; dirty off-yellow (aka 'mustard yellow') a) over a black undercoat, basecoat the area/s graveyard earth b) paint the area/s an with an even coat of 60/40 graveyard earth/bubonic brown mix c) highlight with a mix of 40/60 graveyard earth/bubonic brown d) highlight strait bubonic brown e) extream highlight with 40/60 bubonic brown/desert yellow mix Red: method 1; bright red a) over a black undercoat, apply an even layer of red gore. use multiple thin coats to ensure an even coverage. b) apply blood red to all the raised areas of the model c) highlight the edges with a 50/50 blood red/blazing orange mix d) apply a wash of magenta ink to blend to the colours method 2; darker red a) over a black undercoat, basecoat the area/s with scorched brown b) apply an even layer of scab red over the brown, again using muliple thin coats to avoid any streaking c) highlight all the raised area/s with red gore d) apply an extream highlight to the edges with blood red e) wash all the red area/s with a 60/40 mix of magenta ink & chestnut ink to blend everything together. care of Hairyyahoo: i have a technique for a really deep red that fades away to black which i'd like to share with you all. it'll really add something to minis like khorne zerkers and ad.mech related pieces such as tech priests. a) start with an even black undercoat. is you prime your minis with a blace spray add a thin coat of chaos black as the spray can be a bit chalky. b) apply the first highlight with red gore or scab red mixed with a tiny ammount of chaos black to the top half of the area, feather or blend this in with the black. c) your chosen red is the next highlight, slightly thinned and feathered or blended again. apply this to half the area the last highlight covers. d) final highlight is red mixed with a small ammount of dwarf flesh once more feathered or blended applied to at most half the area the last highlight covers. don't worry if the overall effect looks a little pink at this stage, we'll sort that right out. e) mix up a 60/40 ish wash of red ink and brown ink, not too thin, and apply this to the whole area including the black bits. this'll bring it all together and add richness and body to the colour. White: method 1; 'basic' white a) over a black undercoat, basecoat the area/s codex grey b) paint all the raised areas with fortress grey c) highlight with a 40/60 mix of fortress gray & skull white d) 2nd highlight with strait skull white method 2; 'ghostly/holy' white a) over a black undercoat, basecoat the area/s shadow grey b) apply space wolves grey to all the raised areas c) highlight with a 50/50 mix of space wolves grey & skull white d) 2nd highlight with skull white method 3; 'ancient' or dirty white a) over a white undercoat, wash the area/s with a 60/40 mix of chestnut ink & watered down golden yellow b) paint the raised areas with a 50/50 mix of destert yellow & bleached bone c) highlight bleached bone d) 2nd highlight with a 50/50 mix of bleached bone & skull white e) extream highlight on all the edges with skull white Bone/Parchment method 1; 'yellowed'/aged parchment a) over a white undercoat, wash the area/s with a 50/50 mix of flesh ink & watered down golden yellow b) apply desert yellow to the raised areas c) highlight with a 50/50 mix of desert yellow & bleached bone d) final highlight with bleached bone method 2; a) over a black undercoat, basecoat the area/s snakebite leather b) apply a 60/40 mix of snakebite leather & desert yellow c) highlight with a 40/40/20 mix of snakebite leather/desert yellow & bleached bone d) 2nd highlight with a 20/20/60 mix of snakebite leather/desert yellow & bleached bone e) final highlight with bleached bone Gold method 1; shiny/polished gold a) over a black undercoat, basecoat the area/s scorched brown b) apply an even layer of shining gold. (2-3 coats should do it!) c) highlight burnished gold d) lightly highlight the uppermost area/s chainmail e) highlight the very edges of the model with mythril silver optional: apply a light wash of flesh ink to blend everything together a bit. method 2; battered/worn gold a) over a black undercoat, basecoat the area/s scorched brown b) apply an even layer of shining gold. c) apply a wash of 50/50 watered down chaos black & chestnut ink d) highlight with shining gold more to follow! please feel free to add your own methods for painting odd/annoying/tricky colours too. ![]() cheers!

| The Dark Apostle ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | games workshop is coming out with a new type of paint in two-three weeks. these are for painting over black primer. the guy i talked to was taking pre-orders for a big pack of all of the paints. there are twelve of them, and he said they had 3 times the pigment the normal paints do. they range from red to white. he showed an example of one, white. it was one coat of white on black and it looked fine! i think these will hurt some peoples methods of painting, but they are good for people like me who are too lazy to put in the time to make it look awsome. like stitches stuff apparently =D |
