Nah my webcam has a tendancy to leave a double image around objects I photograph with it...like a halo...so I am pretty much stuck till I get my digi back from my dad...

Or ya know.. You could journey to collins, and I'd be more than happy to take pics of the pups.

But hairy.. How go things... Any progress or updates? I'm watching you!

ok my pedigree chums, i have some more pics to keep you all from snapping at my heels, some for critique some for downright laughing at

firstly, some test runs at true scaling. these are the laugh at ones.

first try

i'm sure you'll agree, a spectacular failure! it looks like the recoil from the launcher is blowing him off his feet!

second try

well, not so spectacular a failure but still not something to be seen outside of this thread. i'm having real trouble figuring out the angles for the cuts. i've tried cutting at 90 degrees to the leg (1st try) and parrallel to the ground (2nd try) and neither seem to work out too well. need some guidance here big time.

i'm putting my initial screw-ups down to the fact that the snap-fit marines are in difficult poses to begin with. at least thats the excuse i'm rolling with. i'm waitin for some proper multi part bits to come in so we'll see how i fair with those.

on a more successful note i've been expanding my painting skill by experimenting with glowing eyes. theres a tutorial here

http://www.coolminiornot.com/article/aid/288

and 2 test runs here

personally, i'm lovin the second one most. even in dim light his eyes seem to glow! so i think thats a success at least.

let me know what you think.

those eyes really are glowy!

now, about the truescale. its a pretty good job. the key is to keep the cut as much at a 90 degree angle as possible as a diagonal cut will (as im sure youve realised) screw up the whole leg. also, the legs are a bit too spreadeagled, like they should be mounted, which really wastes the truescalings since you dont really see the difference in height much.
try make the legs a bit more upright (easier said than done, i know) by cuting the leg at the waist and angling it down a bit.

also, if you really want them nice and tall, take a pair of legs, truesce then then glue thm to a base with the leg thats the most bent standing on something (i usually use a piece of sprue, that i later cover with leftover GS), which will further increase the height. take the first pic of try two (already miles better than the first one - good job), if you stand his left leg on something, he will be a lot taller than he already is.

if you think the legs look a bit thin, you can always bulk them out with GS a bit.

also, since im so lazy, why dont you just post the pics from photobucket rather than link them? just use the IMG code option instead of URL link. it'll make the thread look really spiffy

PS: i should be borrowing a camera from a friend of mine today so ill hopefully get some pics up later on in my own WIP thread to give you more examples of what i mean

great work, keep it up. 5 stars from me

well i would post the pics directly to the thread but for the face that the site won't let me. something about the file being too big. and since i'm a dirty recidevistic technophobe i don't know how to resize them

i'm trying to get my hands on a pin vice to try out another way of extending the legs, namely filing the plasticard til it's level with the leg using a guide pin to make sure it all lines up neatly but since my pin vice got lost in a recent house move and gw have stopped selling them for the moment this might take a while.

dead, its funny you say a diagonal cut doesn't work cos thats the cut i used in the 2nd attempt the 1st one got a 90 degree and he looks like he's doing the splits!

seeing your pics would really help me alot here. be sure to let me know when you post them.

EDIT: changed the links to pics in a rare moment of computer savy, happy now?

lol! well, you know how converting works! in that case, maybe a strategic diagonal cut to get the legs closer together? i you know what i mean?

yeah i think i can puzzle it out. the trouble is that there's a lot of detail in the waist area of the snap-fits, holsters and such, that i'll have to carve off to be able to get at the joint. i'll give it a go and get back to you.

Ah the space wolves... one of the greatest and most humane chapters out there. They are a law unto themselves ya know. After reading all 5 of the ragnar books i can offer you some good advice.

try and use as few helmets as possible to stay with the wolfy feel. Space wolves gain the advantage with their hearing and sense of smell and the helmet cuts this off so to stay true with fluff try and use as few helmets as possible.

for weapons use hammers, axes and swords. These weapons (especially the hammer) were more of the norsemen weapons. (the hammer was actually a a sign of the defender (thors hammer)).

Space wolves and their secondary 13th Company are both great fun and will always be a force to reckon with in combat.

hairy heads with plenty of beard is pretty much a must considering who i am i might even try to sculpt on some more hair and braids and beard, but the last few times i tried that it came out awefull! i guess that nows the time to improve, considering my brief. anyone know how to sculpt realistic hair?

i've just recieved confirmation from bwb that 2 ruddy great grab bags are on their way in the next couple of days so i'll soon be able to put aside the snap-fits and have a go on a proper model. watch this space.

hair isnt too hard - just remember the golden rule of GSing - let it cure for about 20 - 30 minutes before atatcking it with the sculpting tool - itll be a lot easier to shape.

now braids ive never had much luck with though i hear theyre easy. damn these pro sculptrs and their empty promises!

well i thought it would be as simple as twisting a couple of strands of gs together and then texturing them but it seems i was wrong! just tried it out and it went the way of the pear

does anyone have any tips/links for sculpting braids and hair in general?

I know this may sound odd... But look for tutorials on how to do fur trimming and the like. That same method, with careful altering of the texturing directions to make it flow like hair should work.

Did I make sense there?

i dont know what you are using, but I found (WITH MY LIMITED EXPERIENCE) that if you take the Exacto blade #11 and almost cut the GS it gives a very nice hair like effect.

I'm probably the last person to be taking GS advice from but, try letting it get stiff, not fully hardened, and then twist multiple strands together.

i did that with two strands of gs and the problem i encountered was that the texture detail ran in the same direction. thats the best i can explane it in my zombie like state at the mo. i guess i could try it with three strands and braid it like you woud with real hair. not that i know anything about how to braid hair in the real world. ahem.

ok dudes, excuse the double post but i have a update. heres some pics for your enjoyment.

as you can see i'm seeing some better results with the truescaling technique. the pose is much better, only the gs work dosen't meet the hairy seal of approval. i'll work on that i promise.

the braid experiment was a roaring success however. sure the tassely bit at the end is a bit limp but that's a small issue thats quickly remedied, i just need to leave the gs to cure for longer than 10 seconds! (my enthusiasm often wins over my patience). it was really simple to sculpt in the end and i'm well chuffed with it. let me know what you think.

on another note, i just picked up codex sm and sw on ebay for less than the price of the sm book so be on the look out for army list mock-ups.

thats all for now.
end communication.
