Default stitch's 'paint or die' WIP

greetings, greetings fellow terrans!

well, with astro tornoto only 2 months away, i've finally settled on an army; the bearers of dark knowledge space marines.
so, now to build from scratch, a 1500pts army in time for the big event!

to see the army list i'll be working towards, you can find it here; possible astro '07 dark angel list
still undergoing some tweeking, so imput would be great.

as for the eventual look of the army, well, being a chapter of filthy dirty radicals who seek out all things chaos, the bearers will have a darker and more sinister feel to them. the basic sets i'll be combining;
a) black templar upgrade kit:
- chained weapons
- taberd torsos
- 'knightly' helmets
- crusader seals & lanterns
- shoulder pads w/devotional litanies

b) dark angels sprues:
- robed bodies for all sergeants
- deathwing legs
- various shoulder pads
- hanging icons, insense censers
- backpacks

c) space marines + various command frames:
- litanies and scroll cases
- numerous purity seals
- company champion torso
- even more purity seals
- mk6 armour bits

mixed in with these main sets will be various chaos bits from the new command frame & chaos termies to give my marines that darker look; daemonic-headed weapons, skulls, hanging chains and all that fun stuff!

the colour scheme will be dark brown armour, with boltgun metal & shining gold details. the armour will also be highly ornimented with many purity seals and personal litanies.
the bearers have no set chapter badge. instead, brethren display images and icon sacred to the chapter upon their armour how they see fit; the forbidden grimorie, the flames of purity, the chain of penitance and skulls being the most common.

pictures sadly, might be a bit slow in coming... (i have a cell phone camera now, but i have no clue how it works?!) however, i will get plenty of pictures in the end so the finished product at least will be up!
now, how to help you ask? yell at me! kick me, beat me, threaten to take away my supply of tender young meats!!! in other words, help keep me on track! (because i get side-tracked easily you see.)

so finally, for my first squad, i've chosen to build Squad Vengeance; a 5-man tactical squad including 1 flamer and mounted in a razorback...
after a few hours between shifts at the local gw store, the squad is almost built! (hooray!!!) the goal is to have the squad itself fully built and primed before sunset today!

oh, and wish me luck! only 54 more days till astro and 0 models done...

cheers!

I wish you luck with that, though might I suggest making the one or both shoulderpads metal with gold trim, just to make them stand out?

They have the best paint scheme creator. No robes, but the best there is.

well, i've almost got the basic armour itself done! the paint scheme has gone thus;
a) layer scorched brown over ablack undercoat
b) 50/50 mix scorched brown + dark flesh for frist highlight... applied it basically everywhere!
c) sharp highlight of strait dark flesh. picked out the areas around all the armour plates, vents and such... also added a few additional highlights to areas like the helmet.
d) 50/50 mix of dark flesh/beastial brown for final hightlight. basically just emphising the edges of the armour plates.

looks not too bad overall so far. next bit will be the should pad trims, chest eagles, piping and such... probably stick to boltgun metal for all that.

the robes, i'll be leaving the robes themselves black and the inside will be a basecoat of graveyard earth highlighted upto bubonic brown... (so an off-yellow'ish finish to it!)

no clue yet what colour to use though for the weapons casings any suggestions?!

i'll also be placing my bitz order today for the razorback turret sprue along with the additional termie sprue i will eventually need! i'll also be seeing if any of my co-workers have a digi cam i can 'borrow' to get a few pics up... (or rather, have them take the pics because technology hates me!)

cheers!

technology hates me to and i can still make it work, and i'm a fithy technophobic recidevist, so that excuse don't float lil lady!

as for the bloter casings...how about some kind of marble type effect? its original at least. i can't see red working with brown armour and black is a bit meh...

really looking forward to seeing these brown marines. the stages look good.

i like the idea of marbled bolter casings, though it may be a bit much given the timeframe.

hmmmmm... perhaps...

i could at the very least just paint the casings an off-white and leave the marble detail for another time way down the road?!
maybe try something along the lines of kommando khaki - bleached bone - mixed ink wash - bleached bone - sharp white edging?!

cheers!

sounds good to me, and as you said you can always fill in the detail later if you have time.

Stitch, if I can get the method down, do you mind if I steal that idea for the Word Bearers?

nope! feel free to try and use any of my techniques mate - that's the beauty of the on-line community; sharing.

i'm glade that the idea is proving popular... due to the tight time constraint though, i will likely just leave all the weapon casings upto the basic colour and then later go back and add the marbled effect detail.

now, i remeber that there's a great example of marbled armour in WD232, were the 'eavy metal team had a competition with the new chaos lord model.
then there's the bit about vect's raider in WD240'ish (between 241-245 or something like that - it's got a photo of a hellhound in action on the front cover...)

cheers!

well, i've got 1 whole marine done! (hey for me, this ain't too bad )

for the flames, i've gone the following;
a) outline basic shape/design & basecoat in blazing orange
b) highlight upper 2/3rd's with firey orange
c) highlight with 50/50 firey orange + sunburst yellow
d) extream sunburst yellow highlight around the edges.
okay, so yes the colours are compleatly backwards! (the center of the flame is always the hottest) but, you should break that rule for painting onto shoulder pads and armour when the background colour, (black for my shoulder pads!) is darker... (lame excuse i know!)

as for the marble-effect, i ended up with this method;
a) basecoat w/dehneb stone
b) 60/40 flesh ink + brown ink wash
c) highlight with 50/50 khamando khaki + ink wash mix. followed up by 2 watered down coats of khamando khaki to get a nice gradual blending of highlights
d) 50/50 khamando khaki/skull white highlt for the edges and a few other sharpish areas...
afterwards, for the marble veins, i did up a 20/80 mix of KK + chaos black and preyed for my hands to stay good and steady!lol. (i did fine with a standard brush, but if you've forgotten to regularly re-point your brush, then switch to a fine detail brush...)
i then went back and re-washed the areas around the viens and built them back up with highlights... finished off with a coat of brush-on gloos varnish and finally stuck my eyeballs back into my head!

looks quite nice in the end. i used the example from WD232 so it's a white'ish browny look.

and yes, pictures... i know i know... (*ducks just in case*)
if i can bloody well remember to ask if anyone i work with has a digi cam!

now to just figure out what the hell to do with the bases!>.<

cheers!

it went on pretty damn good! i did water it down a bit to ensure it went on good and smooth however, so i ended up using 2 lighter coats of it...
i also used the khemri brown as the basecoat for all of the purity seals/liturgy bits... again, quite nice to be able to do in only two coats something which once took about 5-6 coats minimum of graveyard earth!

cheers!
