| High Lord of Terra ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | OK Ikky ask and you shall recieve Battle Field 40K: A Tutorial in 3 Parts Index: PART 1 – Recon and Intelligence 1. Seeking out the Enemy 2. Rules of Engagement 3. Wanted: Custodian PART 2 – Mustering your Forces 1. Recruitment 2. Organization 3. Submission PART 3 – The Field of Battle 1. Battle Field Analysis 2. Tactical Analysis 3. Final Decision Introduction: Welcome to this handy guide that will hopefully make your first Battlefield Experience not only enjoyable, but also easy to accomplish. So you have decided that you wish to try out our Battle Field feature on 40K Terra, Great! But I know that it can be a daunting task to under take, witch is why this tutorial is being created. It should give you simple step by step instructions on how to look for an opponent, agree upon rules, find a custodian, analyze the battlefield, and post your tactics. Recon And Intelligence: Once you have decided to participate in a battle there are one of two things that you can do. The first and easiest is look through all the posts of people that are currently looking for opponents. To do this, just click on the Battlefield 40k form section (found towards the bottom of 40K Terra’s Form Homepage) and search through the posts looking for someone that doesn’t have an opponent yet. Once you have found one you are interested in just reply to the post stating that you accept the challenge and you are on your way to your first game! The second and more difficult of the two is to post a challenge yourself and wait for some one to take up the fight. There are a few things to consider when you do this. A) You should have a points value in mind B) If you don’t want a crazy scenario thrown at you by the custodian (this will make more sense later on) then I recommend that you list what kind of scenario you wish to face your opponent in C) If you wish to face a particular kind of army. For example you are a Chaos player, you probably don’t want to face another Chaos player so you could make a request to play any Imperial or Xenos army Here is an example of a Challenge that I would post if I were looking for an opponent: Greetings all Imperial Scum! Lord Kal’Thorne and company are looking for a fight against any Imperial armies that think they have what it takes to beat me on the Battlefield! I am looking for a game around 2,000 points and I just want us to beat on each other relentlessly, so lets say a Cleanse Mission. Any one think they have the guts, then just reply here and we will duke it out! Servo Now there is nothing saying that you have to word it like that, but as you can see I have all the relevant information there: army size, type of opponent that I want to fight against, and scenario. Remember that just because someone posted something like this doesn’t mean it is set in stone. If you come across a post like that and it sounds fun, but you want a different sized army or a different scenario or something like that feel free to ask. Most of us are very flexible about Battles and they often change on the fly. You will often run into an occasion where there is just someone looking for a fight and that is common enough as well. Simply reply to the post letting them know you are interested and the rules of engagement can be discussed later on. Here is another example of what I am talking about Looking for a fight, rules and armies are up for discussion. I would like to play with either my Bugs or Chaos. Any takers? Servo Looking at a post like this it would then be your responsibility to reply back with what army you want to bring and a point size to the game. If your opponent agrees then you guys are ready to move on to the next step, or they might want to discuss a little further on the specifics of the lists. Lets move on and assume that you have either found an opponent and agreed to a battle, or that you posted a challenge and someone else has answered the call of battle. What next? Well that is pretty simple, you need to get a custodian. Custodians are the back bone of the Battlefield 40K on this site, so make sure you are kind to them. They have a tremendous work load and they don’t get paid for it so have patience. Sometimes it takes them a few days to get a battle up and running, but they will get to it. Custodians are also the people that get maps ready, scenario rules, and they are also the ones that you submit your lists to for verification. As mentioned earlier if you and your opponent never agreed upon a set scenario then it is up to the Custodian to assign one. Be warned that they vary rarely let you know what the scenario will be a head of time so it is best to try and field an army that is well rounded and can adapt to many situations. DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT start a new thread looking for a Custodian. They are very busy people, but they do check the Battlefield for new battles quite often so when you and your opponent have connected and decided to fight it out, just simply have the last reply in the original challenge thread be something like the following: Custodian Needed! Would the next available one please contact us so that we can submit our lists. Servo Great you now have an opponent, a battle in the making, and a Custodian! Recon and Intelligence is now complete! Mustering Your Forces: The first part of this section is easy, take your appropriate army book and make a list based upon the rules and points values that you and your opponent agreed upon. If you don’t know how to do this, than I suggest heading down to your local gaming shop and asking for help there. It is much to difficult of a process to explain on-line with limited space of pictures. Me, personally, I like to jot my army lists down on notebook paper with a pencil so I can erase and add as much as I want. Some use Army building programs, others just type it out on their computers. No matter how you do it you want to make sure that your list is readable, by both your opponent and more importantly by the people who vote on your battles. You should not submit something like this: HQ: Chaos Lord – 125 Elites: 5 possessed and 5 chosen marins – 220 Troops: 14 Chaos Space Marines and 5 bezerkers – 430 Fast Attack: 3 Bikers – 114 Heavy Support: Predator – 105 Total = 994 This list, even though you know what they are equipped with, doesn’t mean anything to your opponent or the people voting on your battles. The basic rules state that you can have Point totals of units/tanks/characters/monstrous creatures/etc. but you just can’t have individual points listed. So feel free to post up what each entry in your army is equipped with. Here is an example of a much better army list: HQ: Chaos Lord – Power Weapon, Wings = 125 Elites: 5x possessed – Basic Equipment = 130 5x chosen marines – Basic Equipment = 90 Troops: 7x Chaos Space Marines – Aspring Champion, Meltagun Rhino = 165 7x Chaos Space Marines – Aspring Champion, Flamer Rhino = 160 5x Bezerkers – Basic Equipment = 105 Fast Attack: 3 Bikers – Meltagun, flamer = 114 Heavy Support: Predator – Twin-linked Turret Lascannon = 105 Total = 994 See how this army list is much easier to read and you know exactly what every one is equipped with. It just takes a little extra time to do this and it will make a world of difference when it comes to people voting on your battles. Once you have your list compiled, organized, and ready for submission all you have to do is copy and paste it into a Personal Message that you send off to the Custodian. They will then review each list, making sure that it is good on points. Assuming that everything checks out AOK with all lists involved the Custodian will then start a new thread in the Battlefield sub-section of the form, with the scenario, special rules if any, a picture of the table top, and of coarse army lists of all players involved. Congratz! This section is done you may now move on to the final section of the Tutorial. The Field Of Battle: Once a Custodian has started your battle it is now up to the participants in the battle to post tactics and counter tactics in an attempt to sway the viewers to their side and get as many votes as possible. Don’t worry if you get crushed your first time out, or even your forth or fifth time. This is a place to test out lists and learn tactics. If you are having problems with making lists that win then I would recommend searching in your armies section of this website for advice and if all else fails ask questions. You won’t learn anything unless you ask questions. Tactics is where people have the most problems, but there are a few things that you can do to help yourself out with this. I believe it was Brother Warchild who came up with the idea of posting visual tactics. Some examples are below. Orginal picture of table top ![]() Modified by myself and Brother Warchild with our tactics 'drawn' on it ![]() As you can see from these pictures I can use the colored arrows and markings to let people know exactly what I am planning on doing. Sir_Servo’s tactics, For example, were something like this: The Light Blue are Hellhound Tanks moving up to spear head the assualt, the Red are Leman Russ following behind the Hellhounds for firepower and heavy support, the Green are Storm Troopers in Chimera Transports using the Hellhound as a distraction as they deploy and unleash with their flamers on whom ever is in there way, and the Blue ‘X’ is my Command HQ with Mortars witch will bomb the heck out of who ever is left over. All that was used here was a simple ‘Paint’ program that comes base on 99% of PC’s/Mac’s out there to draw your tactics out. It is tricky at first, but once you try a few times it should become much easier for you. This way if you are not very good at typing or explaining what your units are going to do, you can show a visual representation of your tactics. *NOTE* this method does require a Photobucket.com (or some other similar website) in order to do. Tutorials on how to up load pictures can be found else where on the site. Quite often your opponent will point out flaws in your tactics and try and work around them. You in turn can do the same. All though this is good for developing tactics and trying to sway people to your way of thinking, it can create a lot of junk for your voters to sift through. This is not a rule, but more of a guideline that I follow. I allow myself my original Tactical Post and then up to 3 responses to my opponent. Anything more and it just gets to be too much and people won’t read or vote because there is just too much going on. I also recommend that your original Post on tactics be thorough, but your responses be much shorter, this will save on space and make it easier for every one to read. All that is left is for people to read over the Army lists and Tactics and then to vote. The most important thing to remember is that voting is not personal, or at least shouldn’t be. Every one should have the integrity and maturity to look at what is presented to them and make an informed decision. Have Fund and if you need any more help just PM Sir_Servo More than my two cents, Servo Last edited by Sir_Servo; 05-14-2008 at 11:34 AM.
