Default advice needed to GT armylists! help please

Guys
looking for a little help here, im trying to go to the uk grand tournament next year, asumming i can get the time off, and im looking at running a guard army. in particular im looking at playing a force that looks like dave taylors grenswick guard - as i know DKOK will be two a penny next year - but as ive never been to a tourney before i have no idea what will make a good list (and i promise to virtual wedgie the first person to say marines!!) to not only enjoy playing but also to be competeative againt the mariad of forces ill face.

last i checked the UK GT runs a 1500 point list but correct me if im wrong on this. so any help or suggested lists that are in character with the force i want to take would be greatly appreciated.

thanks in advance

Take your standard Leman Russ or two, maybe a Basilisk, but try to model it like a WWI artillery gun. Lots of infantry, probably want to go with lots of heavy stubbers or heavy bolters as machine guns were the major killers during WWI. Rough Riders will help for maneuverability, and horses were still around (in limited numbers), I believe.

Probably no storm troopers. I don't think troops were that specialized yet. I think transports should be kept to a minimum, too. I don't think they had too many of those.

However, I don't know guard that well, and I have never been to a GT. I went to a RTT, and didn't do that well. The ones who beat my team were ones that basically had a plan and stuck to it. Each unit had a purpose, and they utilized them to full effect.

Sorry I'm not of more help...

Put up a list of what you think you should have, and I'm sure others will be able to comment effectively on it.

well, i've never been to a gt before but i do have a bit of experience with the guard. boiling it all down it more or less comes to this; get two of everything you take. seriously, why buy one when you can get two for twice the price?

my standard 1500pt list runs something like this. i don't know whether it will fit with your theme though.

hq senior officer
2 special weapon squads with demo charges (a simply awesome weapon and at 45 pts per unit an absolute steal!)
2 anti tank squads (usually missile launchers for flexability)
2 decent sized platoons (hq + 3 infantry squads)
2 armoured fist squads
2 leman russes
1375pts

that leaves you 125 pts to add special and heavy weapons where you want them. to shave a few more points change one infantry squad in each platoon to a 5 man remnant, netting you another 60 pts.

as for tactics i normally have one of the russes lead the two chimeras in a mini armoured spearhead to set up a second fire position on a flank or claim an objective, while the second russ supports the infantry advance.

sure its nothing special to look at. theres no funky doctrines or outlandish wargear, but it does what it says on the tin.

from talking with alot of uk gt goers, it seems that the event has become an all-out 'bring the hardest & dirtiest army you can' type of event... yes there are those who go simply for the fun of it - and thus end up on the bottom tables.

if you do want to compeat though and see how many games you can win, you'll need to look for efficiantcy & ruthlessness in your list. look for doctrines that don't cost any pts or else very few in total... (iron discipline is an absolute must have!!!)
the following seem to be top-notch;
- iron discipline
- drop troops
- veterans
- close order drill

as for your unit selection;
- autocannon & plasma guns in every infantry squad
- 3x hardened vets w/3 plasmaguns... if you deep strik 'em, stick to only the base 5-man unit. otherwise it's 10 + lascannon & 3 plasmas
- 1 bassie minimum, 2 at the absolute most.
- 1 demolisher. shorter range yes, but better armour all round. stick to heavy bolters or heavy flamers though!
- perhaps a small grenadier squad or two mounted in chimeras with either 2x plasma or meltaguns for grabing objectives late-game...

so yes, cheese is a must if you really want to compeat at the top level! expect to fact a deluge of slaanesh 'lash' lists, the flying circus and other such horrific mockaries of fun & games!

cheers!

I would also like to also point out Die Hards. I belive I have been using both Die Hards and Iron dicipline together for a while now, and I love it. What both Experiment626 and Hairyyahoo have said is correct.

Cheap doctrines.

Reduncancy. If you are gonna take 1 tank, find the points and take 2. Redunancy helps when you need to keep the focus off certain units. People tend to get scared when you field tanks, some forget to really look at what will hurt their list.

Horde. IG is a horde army, however we specialize in shooting over other horde armies that are more assault. Utilize this, put as many heavy weapon's on the table as possible. 1500 points I try to field atleast 12 heavy weapon's. My personal fav is HB support squads (6 HB), Lascannon's in the line squads, and Autocannon's in the Platoon HQ's.

We really cant tell you how to play your IG. All we can do is give you our opinions of your list from our experience. I have not gone to a GT, but been to a number of RTT's. All I can say is that in tournaments what has hurt me in the past is mobility. Being able to claim mission objectives, moving a static shooting army is rough.
