| Like the title says I want to build and army but I want to be able to transition nicely from a starting army to a larger one, I already figured out that I have to have at Least an HQ and two troops. That would probably put me at about half of 500 or something what is next to add? Elites, Fast, Heavy? I plan on building some small armies at first as I am a collector by nature anyway and which ever one I like more on the field I will eventually expand upon. My three armies that interest me the most is Necrons, Tau, and SM Dark Angels(The Ravenwings) Any help or insight is really appreciated as this will determine what I spend my monies on.

| easiest way to build an army i find is to write out a list of what you want to take, then add it all up! once you've figured out what units and such really appeal to you, break your 'master list' down into chuncks... so for example, if you pick say the dark angels ravenwing, a great start is the ravenwing battle force! that nets you the following; 1 master of the ravenwing in landspeeder 2 squads of 3 bikes 1 attack bike so that's your HQ, 2 small squads of Troops and a Fast Attack choice right off the bat! that little lot will probably total in at about 600pts or so... now to add onto that, you could get a 2nd battleforce + 1 land speeder. that gets you your HQ plus 2 full ravenwing attack squadrons! easily takes you upto 1000pts, if not a few extra! hope this helps, cheers!

that is the best way to build your army make a master list then break it up into buying chunks battle forces are the best bet for the first couple of purchases since they have the most commonly used units for that given army then you move on to your specialized units and purchases

| The blue one is very, very wise. I will definitely start out with the battleforce sets for $90 and what they have they are really worth it. Thanks guys. Oh also when you start out a small army(500-1000) I assume it is always better to go for as many units as you can right?

| well if you want to start out real small you can go for a combat patrol list that 400 pts without too many unit restrictions except for a few but i was thiking make a nice 1500-2000pt army and use that as a over all goal post to move towards

| Not sure what you mean by "Combat Patrol list" is that an army set up of some kind. I do wish to expand my armies to over a thousand eventually hitting the 2000 mark. Jus want to build them right and make sure everything is covered as I go to the goal of making well rounded armies.

Blog Entries: 5 | Rom is always useful for info.. I second the idea of a combat patrol, as it is almost 'miniature' 40k and a good way to get accustomed to most rules... 3-4 combat patrols of different armies is always a good idea. Try playing each, and exapnd whatever army you like the most out of that to 500 or 750 pts. and playing an actualy game or two with that force to make sure you like them. That way, you don't end up like me, with 2K or so of an army, and find out you don't really like how they play! lol
