Default Advanced GS Casting Tutorial

Before attemting what is below these words try my other Tut: Nanolathe's "Simple Green-Stuff Casting" Tutorial

Well I'm here again with a promised tutorial, I call it: Green-Stuff Casting; Making the Mould <Take 2>

First I'd like to list the things you will need
  1. Green-Stuff (or eqv)
  2. Cornflour (or eqv)
  3. The thing you want to cast (obviously)
  4. Time, an evening or 2 (or eqv )
I'm back to you how to make a Full Cast!

First step, find what you're wanting to cast, I chose something a little more complicated this time, a Bolter!

Take a bit of Green-Stuff (epoxy putty) about the size of a penny and squish it into the mould making sure that you press the GS into all the nooks and crannies. This is very important so as to keep bubbles out of the GS.
Dust with:

**This stage was important. If you didn't dust with cornflour then go back and do it... NOW!**
Shove in the item you're wanting to the GS mould and carefully press it in...**CAREFULLY DAMN YOU!**

make some secondary indents into your GS (I used the blunt end of my modeling knife... just use something to give a nice clean simple shape. This is so your mould will fit back in the same place each time you use it.) Let it completely cure after this stage

Make up a second mould half and dust it with cornflour:

Carefully press it onto the first mould.

Pinch them together, applying a lot of pressure... you don't want bubbles.

let this cure over night... seriously, let it cure that long AT LEAST!
in the morning (or afternoon if possible) of the next day take a scalpel and run it around the outside edge being careful to NOT dig it in deeply (watch your fingers here kids, if you can't do it without cutting yourself ask your parent or guardian to do it for you). take a much blunter object (I've chosen the end of a drill bit) and pry the whole thing open like a mussel shell

using the same blunt instrument pry out your item

There you have it, a double sided mould! each time you want a new cast dust both sides with cornflour and clamp them together over more GreenStuff (removing excess GS before curing takes place)

As always you can come back to this Tut any time you like just by clicking on the link in my sig!

Nice job! the only time I have ever seen anything different done was when a person over on warseer pressed a toothpick through the still curing GS as an overflow type channel. Though it didn't seem necessary to me, I wanted to see if you thought that was just BS, or...?

+ rep for this, it will be VERY useful in the future I feel.

I don't think it's necessary. press together, see if it's too much or too little, adjust until perfect, allow to cure.

That's what I thought, but it's always nice to know from one who does this more often.

I'm assuming it's better to have too little than too much?

not at all, in fact the reverse is true. Too little and you'll have dents or even outright holes in the cast, too much and you'll just have slightly thicker flash to trim

the toothpick would be used if you were resin casting as you need a vent to get the resin in and to get the resin out.

BTW I'll have a Resin Casting tutorial soon as i believe i have found a way to do it without getting into trouble.

Steve.

Very nice man. This will definitly come in handy with 1)Iron Hands 2)Night Lords and Konrad Curze. Allthough now that I think about it... perhaps I can mass produce Krieg bitz/gear... now that would be amazing.

Good post man.

Yeh... The terie ones have the funky waffling on the bottom that prevent them form being used for such.

I have some extra slotted and regular MM bases... I'm now going to go home and see if I can do this w/ a maximus helm.
