Default Resin Casting Tutorial

How to cast minis in resin. i picked heads because GW does not sell heads individually so i am hopefully not in infringement zone.

Step one Preparation

Tools:
Soft clay
2 part silicon rubber mold
2 part RTV resin
area (ventilated)
mold release (vaseline)

Step 2: Create your casting base (clay and tupperware)

this is were you decide your mold lines will be. choose wisely.

Step 3:mix 1st half of your mold

this is a 2 part mold so i need to mold in 2 separate parts as ALL AIR BUBBLES MUST ESCAPE!

Step 3:Pour your mold:

Step 4: remove clay backing be sure to remove all the clay that you can. some may remain, but if you do it right it wont interfere with the details:

Step 5 apply mold release (i use vaseline) as the silicon sticks only to silicon you need to be able to pull the mold apart DO NOT USE TOO MUCH!
then re-set your molding area:

Step 6: pour 2nd half of mold.

Step 7: remove mold and cut your vents be sure not to cut them too big!

Step 8 Set your mold. tape will not stick to the silicon so use cardboard and tape them together.

Step 9: Mix your resin and pour into the mold

LET THE RESIN DRY (usually an hour)

Step 10: remove from the mold

let it dry thouroughly (2 hrs) then trim and model ! great fun for all.

WARNING you may get air bubles in your resin. deal with it. if you can still use the piece then use it if not you only need to put more resin in the mold and try again.

Believe my your first will not be perfect and this is not cheap to start.

TIPS:

Add anchors (you may notice that i started with 4 heads and ended with 3. this is not because i messed up, i used one of the heads as an anchor and removed it after the first half of mold. this is so that the sides line up. if you do 1 of these or even 2 your mold lines will not be AS noticable and your chance of miscast is far less.)

Use a paintbrus to apply your mold release. it goes on thinner and evenly. as it is clear it is hard to see so you sometimes dont know if you have an eighth or an inch on there and believe me that is WAAY too much.

it is actually not that involved in the prep stage. get your pieces you want to copy, clean of all lines and flash then just follow the steps from there.

the main time spent is waiting for everything to harden each half of the mold takes 12-24 hours. other than that pretty straight forward.

BvL Your lucky you have RICH relatives!!! With that board and models your in mucho dinero!!! this would be a great way to bolster your forces and trench cheap BUT remember you cannot sell any of these as it is a violation of copyrights. you can do it for your own things but if you ever get rid of that army your stuck with those models.

That being said (just to CYA you know....) if you want some info OR something worked with, send me a PM or email.

That was just a blurb to cover your (my/our) A55 [CYA]. If it wasn't said and some knucklehead tried to sell them on EBAY...(its happened, I bought some recasts from there) he could hold the site liable for not putting a disclosure blurb in there. He could say "well I learned it from 40K Terra and they didn't say I could do it....."

Not to insult your intell BUT it had to be done.

indeed it would as it has been hacked apart and re-sculpted it is completely DC property i just would be helping them proliferate.

all copywrighying says that a 20% change and it is no longer protected by IP so it is yours. 20% is long passed by you.
