Best Ranged Chapter

The custom chapter I am making right now is really a strict range combat style. Will have CC for balance but mostly Ranged fighting. Now for the back ground, or derived from I was picking Imperial Fist. I know Imperial Fist are a defensive tactic chapter, so I am guessing they are pretty ranged and from what I hear they are one the of chapters that uses the range style fight the most? Also the Luna Wolves, from reading the HH series, sounds like there pretty balanced or maybe more towards Ranged? I was thinking either have them derived from the Imperial Fist, Luna Wolves, or some chapter that would be a better fit, that is where you guys could possibly come in and lend a hand at. Thoughts?

so are luna wolves, so no chapters would be derived from them. chaos jerks ! :P
anyhow..umm you could easily set up a codex chapter with the traits [or even without the traits !] that would allow you to stand and shoot for long times.

the one that lets you get up to 6 dev squads comes to mind :P as well as the one that always gives you a better cover save for sitting and shooting :] i don't know of any GW supported fluff chapters that use those traits though :[

Did a Pre-Heresy army strike your thoughts at all?
Pre-Heresy 1k sons or Iron Warriors would be both a challenge and at the same time very unique. You'll run into very few people who build, let alone play with a Pre-Heresy army.

Considering he said 'Chapter' I'm not sure why you guys are suggesting any first foundings at all, as they were all Legions pre-heresy, and for the Traitors, still are... Then again, maybe not everyone is as much a pre-heresy/fluff nut as I am.(see Nano.. I can play the semantics game too, fun eh?).

But, if we're speaking in just best shooty army for marines... I'd say the best isn't a pure strain army.

It's Slaanesh Noise Marines and Termies combined with 1k Sons troops and a Slaanesh Sorc w/ Lash, and perhaps a second tzeentch daemon prince/lord with some of the stock and standard powers there. Perhaps two sorcs w/ lash.

The ability to shoot nearly anything and deny it a save, as well as the ability to move those nice juicy units out of cover and wherever you want w/ lash... It just hurts to think about it.

Well could I just make a Chapter derived from them, what I am saying is part of the Iron Warriors remained Loyal. Now there just a different nanme, paint scheme etc....?

You could have them keep the paint scheme unless you don't actually like Iron Warriors colors...well its your army. Pre heresy would be cooler I think...

Maybe you could get ambitious and model their primarch preheresy!

Well there is no doubt I want to make a custom army. So what do you think would be the best path.

so go for it put your own touch on it

No one mentioned the Dark Angels. Traditionally the DA are one of the shootiest chapters.

The salamanders and Imperial Fists also have always struck me as more "shooty" armies...

If you want to use Chaos rules, go ahead... as it is, there are very few daemons in the CSM army, so you can easily have them "count-as" loyalist marines.

Erus' comment on a Noise Marine/Rubric Marine army has potential...

The thing is I do not want to go Pre-Heresy, what would be so bad saying they where once Loyalist Iron Warriors but now have changed. there scheme and name?

Also are the Iron Warriors more into the robotic look like the Iron Hands?

Iron Hands actually want to be robotic, they hate flesh for being weak and curruptable.

Iron Warriors just have metallic colors though they do have an abundance of vehicles, tech-marines, and battle-brothers with Bionics.


(Eye to Eye, Trait that lets you take more dev squads, trait that allows Techmarines as HQ choices, and a minor draw back of your choice.)

Then paint them anyway you want as long as they don't look exactly like a defined chapter.

Since Thousand Sons are a ranged type of army, I would consider doing them, but with the whole Blood Ravens maybe being part of them, it is kind of a turn off becuase it is being done already. So it will come down to the Imperial Fist or Iron Warriors.m Either way there gooing to be a different scheme.
