Default In need of some help.

Well I just bough a "Space Marine Company." I now have a small problem, what chapter to field!!! At first I wanted to make them Ultra Marines. But the more and more I read the SM codex as it stands is pretty overpowered and will be put in check in the near future. Im pretty sure I can still assemble them and just hold of painting till further news arrives about the next imperial codex. Or I could work on making my DIY Chapter and hope the SM Trait rules dont get hit too hard with the nerf bat.

What I would like is your opinion on this matter and if you have a chapter in mind I could research I would be in you debt. The Chapter would have to be fit the following profile:

-Loyalist
-Drop Pod Friendly
-Troop Heavy

3:1 ratio troops to heavy support, being that it is a troop heavy army I plan to make Dreadnoughts a big part of my army. Think QRF type. Thank fellow 40kTerra followers.

Don't worry about the overpowered thing - Marines will always be that. If your heart lies with Ultra SMurfs, do them, Blue is a good colour to paint.

I always say choose an army on looks and fluff, the army list will sort itself out. You dont want to lustfully be looking at an Ultra Marine army thinking "why didnt I do that".

And besides rumour wise it'll be a while before Marines get a redux, they may not get one until the next lot of rules.

look towards the new dark/blood angel codicies as a rough guide as to how the marine codex itself will look... (ie: 'combat squads' & no min/maxing!)

as for what chapter? well, the ravenguard are pretty troop heavy in that they have few tanks - just loads of tactical, devastator & assault marines, along with plenty of scouts!

or else, the imperial fists. again, they tend to field lots of bodies where possible, but favour more devastator squads...

crimson fists have tactical squads, but few other assets since the disatrous rynn's world incident. they also look quite good too with the deeper blue armour & dark red gauntlets!

if you like lots of dreads then look to the iron hands and their successor chapters! you can make a pretty stonking army with just tactical squads + 6 dreadnoughts!

hope this helps,
cheers!

OK I missed something...a redux on the SM dex?...

I would say go for your own chapter as it were...if the traits get a smack down you can simply rework them without having to rewrok your entire army ( as I have had to to twice now)...and blue is such a peaceful color....LMAO

Go for the coolest chapter, in your opinion that is. If you want an idea for a combat drop oriented army, you could field the Star Phantoms, who led the drop assault on Huron Blackhearts fortress.

I would say do a custom chapter. I think it would be more fulfilling to fully fluff out my own diy chapter than take the ball GW had passed you (ultramarines, imperial fist, etc.). But hey thats just me.

Sounds interesting. Do you know where I could read up a bit more about the Star Phantoms?

there was a rumour (pretty strong one) about a year ago that SM were getting a redux after orks and Chaos, but Gav Thorpe has quashed it now.

He did?

From what I heard, it was all confirmed that Summer 09 the codex was going to be Codex:Space Marines.

Havent seen the 09 rumour. He pretty much said there wasnt going to be a SM update as they were updating the other armies. Though this was all a while ago, so u turns may have been made.

[Dark Eldar are a strong contender for 2009] though they do release two in a year.

the studio is simply trying to cover the collective arses about just how bad a failure the current space marine codex is... still though, the plans to do a 'quick and dirty' re-do have be put back a bit. (it was slated for summer '08, but now there's that tasty new daemon book!)
still, it will come and smurf players aren't going to like it one bit! (traits if they do stay, will work very, very differently!)

back on topic though, try a general search for 'captain stern's index astartes' website. he has a bit of info on pretty much any chapter GW has named through the years!

cheers!

Hmmm.. With Iron Hands, via a loop hole, you can field 6... VENERABLE dreads.

I would wait however, for the new Forgeworld Imperial Armor, the one for Apocalypse. It has a formation/data sheet for a full SM drop pod force (of god.. There goes the size of the black saints again!!!!).

This is all I can find on the Star Phantoms.

Quote:
Star Phantoms
The Star Phantoms participated in the Badab War. This Chapter was responsible for the final assault which ended the Badab War. Over five hundred marines assaulted the palace, and during the assault, crippled Huron Blackheart. The Cities of Death expansion book claims Captain Androcles of the Star Phantoms wounded him with a combi-melta in an ambush, although other sources claim this was an orbital bombardment...wikipedia

Seems like you'd have a lot of leeway in setting up the force, but you also have a fairly solid background too!

Seeing as it would be a SM Chapter who specialized in drop pod assaults. I was thinking of using one of the following 2 options of traits:

Heed the wisdom of the Ancients and Have pride in your colors

or

Heed the wisdom of the Ancients, Cleanse and Purify, Eye to Eye and Have pride in your colors.

Both combinations I believe fit the profile in my opinion. What is everyone's overall opinion here?

Both look good.
Now all you have to do is decide on a colour scheme.

I'd go with the second. Plasma Cannon + Plasma Gun = death! BTW... If you need drop pods, send me a PM, I can help you there.
