Default Where have all the marines gone?

Anyone notice this? A space marine company is comprised of 10 squads, or 100 men. A whole chapter has ten companies, or 1000 men. Supposedly they are limited to having exactly a thousand men. Something is missing here. I can understand that the Chapter master and such are simply part of the First company. But what about who drive the Rhinos and Land raiders? What about Battle barges and Strike Cruisers? Surely they don't just let servitors and normal humans drive the things. Am I missing something?

Servitors and regular humans pilot the ships in space most often, w/ an SM overseer/captain of the ship.

Rhinos and such are piloted by tech-initiates according to fluff, so.. 10th company recruits showing a skill at machines?

right. in the soul drinkers books, the pilots and things are generally called chapter serfs, and they do all the menial work while the marines go out and choppy-choppy.

i know, it's kinda strange to think that while other armies have thousands upon thousands of units, SMs only get 1000, but oh well :P

I've heard reference to Chapter serfs before but never actually seen GW make an effort to mention them. But it's logical that they do all the piloting etc.. cooking.. imagine Leman Russ wearing an apron with a spoon and stirring a pot of stew...

.... its pretty crappy to have 1000 SM in a chapter but i guess the serfs make it up even though no one knows if they do any driving or stuff ....

I thought that LR`s and Rhinos and Preds and LS`s are piloted by the not so choppy marines within the chapter

But that might be TSOALR messing with me.

I think that the 1000 Marines in a chapter is more of a rough guide to dedicated Warriors, and doesn't really include Astartes ship officers and Vehicle Drivers.

Do the Dreds count towards the 1000 marines?

I think dreads are like the other vehicles in that their drivers/occupants dont count towards the 1000 battle brethren total (same with Librarians and Techmarines)

the 1000 is battle troops
not including support personel
there are way more than 1000 marines in the chapter
chaplain and their student dont count towards that number niether do the techmarines and their students same with librarians adn their trainees
in most cases the chapter master and his homies dont count toward that number
and it doesnt count any marines that arent full fledged battle brothers or the 100 initiates
so its 10 companies of 100 battle troops
not drivers and crew of vehicles
and dreads definately dont count toward that number

Hehe... a dread would count only has half a marine anyway

Plus, not all chapters abide by the Index Astartes as a whole

haha, them crazy wolves, always doing whatever they want :P
one thing though, where i've read about chapter serfs i've also read that in the most desperate of times, the serfs will take up arms alongside their power-armored masters...just a thought.

Well, firstly, 1000 is a number meant to be taken with a VERY, VERY large pinch of salt. It still varies radically. This number includes your squads and their respective sergeants.

Anyone above a line officer is excluded from this, including command squad members. Each Captain is a surplus, plus their command squads. Chaplains and command squads are a surplus, librarian's + CS as well...the list goes on. The number 1000 is good when referring to the Chapter's line-and-file, but when you go above that, things get tricky. Also, the radically changing roster lists due to KIA's and MIA's means that you'll never have a true number of the Marine's in that Chapter.

The Chapter most likely to have and accurate number of Marines, though, are the Ultramarines. They have the best logistics dept. in the business.

So yeah, take this number very lightly indeed.

i would think having more then just a "1000" would make a chapter more successful.

The reason for the small number is the effort to prevent another heresy war

Yeah...Roboute Guilliman decreed after the Horus Heresy that all the Legions (Which had upwards of 10,000 Marines at full strength) split into Chapters in the first founding. Each Chapter was to be 1,000 Marines in strength. This was so that no one man could control the might of a full Legion of Space Marines, and so the threat of rebellion on a scale such as the Horus Heresy was pretty much quashed (Although there was the Age of Apostasy and Vandire's Reign of Blood...but let's not dwell on that )

ok so here's a bit of 'in yer face'...
Russ declared that his chapter would only be split once...leading to the now defunct Wolf Brothers...so there are definately MANY more Wolves than the High lords would like for there to be...LMAO...makes for a nice bit of banter don't you think?

And Russ in an APRON....????....*looking at Killer333 with brow raised* i have a little game thing here I like to call Flogger...it's similar to frogger in that it makes YOU jump around a bunch...LMAO

just like to point out that the Age of Apostasy and Vandire's Reign of Blood are one and the same.

But we all can guess that more likely than not the chapter masters have all "interpreted" the 1000 to mean "not including x, y, and z special ranks/types" to get more out of it :P

I know the CF only counts bodies directly invovled with the fighting towards Total combat strength and seeing how the Emperor and therefore all Space Marines were born in Canada that must be how things are run in the Chapters.

10000 would have been the average.
The Ultramarines supposedly had around 22,000 rank and file troops at the start of the heresy.

I never did think the 1000 space marines included command squads and such, then the Battle company data-sheet from apoc came along.

Battle Company:
1 captain
0-1 chaplain
1 command squad
6 ten man tactical squads
2 ten man assault squads
2 ten men devestator squads

And a rhino + crew for all save the assault squads puts 1 company at around 115-120 marines.
