Default Painters of Terra...UNITE!!!

Friends, Terrans, Painters...lend me your brushes!

I, along with the esteemed mart007, have conceived of a dream. A dream of such scope and ambition it'll make your head spin. A dream to rival the painting guide section of the mighty CoolMiniOrNot!!!

Crazy, you say? Without a doubt! Ambitious? Yep! Impossible? NEVER!!!

Now that we have our own painting tutorial forum i am asking, nay pleading, for your help filling it with handy hints and tips. It doesn’t matter what it is, whether it's self-evident beginners stuff or super-advanced techniques that'll test the abilities of even the most accomplished artists among us, if you got it we want it!. None shall be turned away, no matter what. The only proviso is to make it accessible to everyone. Make it idiot proof! The more detailed the explanation and the clearer the pics, the better.

What we're looking for here is painting advice from us, to us. Just posting a link to another forum isn't enough. Put your own stamp on it and it'll have a home here. Also, if you have an alternative method for doing something that's already been covered feel free to add to that thread so we end up with a variety of different methods of doing the same thing, in the same place (makes for less searching)

"But Hairy, nobody wants to see how I go about painting my models!"
Wrong, I do! Get it documented, get it posted. Someone's bound to find it usefull.

"I don't use the same paints as the rest of the forum, i can't help"
No excuse, many of us use different brands of paint. Just list the colours you use in your brand and the nearest equivalent in citadel colour if pos.

I'll personally +rep every tutorial, and every how-to addition (complete with pics) to a existing tutorial.

so next time you sit down to do some painting be sure you have the camera handy!

p.s use this thread to list the topic you want to cover so that we don't all do the same thing.

i'll be covering glowing eyes and a bit of object/source lighting (gregor, feel free to chime in on either of these).

happy painting.

Good speech!!!

For this to work and to make it better than CMoN, we need tips from painters at all levels. I find when I look at CMoN, they are showing you how to paint to demon standard. Well guess what, few of us are demon standard and will neither fully get to that standard from either the want, time or skill.

Instead of just focusing on advanced level painting we need good clean tips that can help everyone paint an army to an above average level at reasonable speed.

-Everyone- Show us what your doing, any little thing at whatever level can spark an idea or inspire the whole of Terra!!!

-sits down and ponders how the hell I'm gonna get through all these minis-

forgot 2 add - I'm doing eye pieces and gems next.

Krom is working on a metal how to.

thanks guys, can't wait to se your input

wolfie, the glowing runes sound very cool, but between you me and gregor we could wind up with a lot of "glowing whatever" tutes. how d'ya feel about posting them all in a thread entitled "different OSL effects"? i dunno, maybe they'd be better as seperate threads?
what do the rest of you think?

I think in the same thread. So when someone searches for glowing lighting effect they find them in one place. We must make sure threads are well titled though. Maybe when a thread has wound up for after week we should delete questions and compound them into one post under the tut so it doesent look confusing when someone is looking through a thread of glowing effects? They can see the tuts instantly and easily with a Q+A at the bottom. If they have a question at anytime post it up and we compact it in the Q+A post under the specific stepxstep.

[edit]
I sent this to Hairy, but I think it may be better to share to see what everyone thinks:

I think we should keep any crit out of this topic so as we build it up people arn't scared that when they post one up they are gonna get 10 people saying well I think you should do it like this and keep it very much "this is how I do it". If some one has a differing way then they can post there own tut up. That way we can create a positive spin on someone doing something.

If people want to have stuff to be crit or advice they can post it up on W.I.P. for that kind of thing. We basically just want this to be a library of tips.

dont think it needs a seperate thread, just specify in title OSL... that should be enough.

Perhaps rather than lumping them together, we just make a master thread for OSL, that allows no comments (closed) with links to the different authors methods and a short description? It's what I do for my fluff usually

Could work also, but it may be handy to have Q+A at the bottom it is a bit more instant and may make it less hassle for people.

erus: this is an interesting idea...something like a sticky index thread with links for all topics rather than just osl. this'll be hand to remember for when we have pages full of tutes. thanks dude.

ion raptor: battle damage on what? power armour? vehicles? or something that can be applied to any/everything? the colours thing will be handy, thanks.

chaplin_shadow: if you know a bit about brushes then something on brush selection would be cool if you fancy it.

This is great. I also have planned - sealing minis, and making, and painting rocks, cheaply and very realistic!

I don't know much on actual painting, but i've done a lot of research into alternate paint brands. Could easily do an article there, possibly with a cross-reference of color compatibility from brand to brand?

Brilliant ideal, Hairy. I myself can use all the painting tips I can get. I haven't painted a model for a decade or so. I used to paint warplanes alot when I was younger, but I haven't even begun painting my Black Legion. To tell you the truth, I'm a bit intimated by it. I truly look forward to all the tips, because alot of the members are truly talented painters. I especially hold Cag in high regard, his Carnifex is one of the sweetest models I've seen. I would particualrly love to see DC post some hints on painting LATD, cause I'm gonna build some soon. I'm throwing rep your way for just coming up with this brilliant (or mad, not sure which yet) ideal, my hairy friend!
