Painting tutorial: advanced faces

yo to you all

so, another day off another tutorial to keep me out of mischief

this one is experimenting with a technique i found elsewhere for painting faces. it's a fairly involved process, this having taken me about half an hour to complete, so only try it if you're brave

i chose this particular head to a couple of reasons, 1 i had lots of um sittin in me bitz box and 2 because the sculptor thoughtfully made it very detailed which is perfect for illustrating this trick.

when painting a face it's the contrast between the shadows and highlights that really make it pop so i'm gonna really emphasise this and see what happens.

you need;
-scorched brown, scab red, dwarf flesh, bleached bone.
-the smallest damn brush you can get your mits on, i used a 4/0
-a bloody steady hand!

each stage of highlight is actually made up of 2 very thin coats, a bit thinner than i usually use but the effect speaks for itself (or at least i hope it does)

i started with a base coat of scorched brown over a black undercoat (i won't show you this as it's really dull). once this is dry mix up a 2 SB:2DF:1SR and apply it to almost all of the face, only leaving it in the deepest recesses.



add another dose of dwarf flesh and hit the raised areas of the face around the forehead, nose, cheeks,chin and mouth creases like so...



now the same with pure dwarf flesh



add 2 thin washes of scab red and reapply the dwarf flesh highlights



1:1 mix of dwarf flesh and bleached bone and another red wash and yur done

Nice one Hairy.Quick question on eye's,You have seen my pics,The Lyslander Model with the black eye's.The hole blake eye's thing is a part of my chapter fluff,where there eyes are straight black due to gene seed.Problem is i dont like the solid black paint in eye socket of kig any idea's on how to do better?

Hairy, how about a tutorial that starts from a lighter shade so to give a more natural appearance rather then the extreme highlight version.

Oops, almost missed printing this one Hairy. Should come in very handy, I have a few CSM without helmets. Haha, gathering all the knowledge I can so I'll be well prepared when I start painting (very soon, ahha!).
