Default Painting Tutorial: Blood stained weapons

Hey everyone today I'm bringing you a painting tutorial on painting bloodstained weapons. I'll be using GW paints and 2 old and very very frayed drybrushes. i'll be illustrating this technique on an Iron Warriors Arm with a knife that I'm painting for friend.

Colors you will need for this method:
Red Ink, Blood Red, Red Gore, Flesh Wash and whatever metal you painted the weapon with.

Allright Step 1: Paint the weapon as you would normally.

Step 2: Apply a quick drybrush of red ink on the area where you're going to put have the blood.
Example:

Step 3: Go back and take the metal color you used on the blade, in this case boltgun metal, and stipple it over the red ink so you paint over most of it but not all.
Example:

Step 4: Drybrush Red Gore over the entire stained area.
Example:

Step 5: Apply a quick drybrush of Flesh Wash.
Example:

Step 6: Drybrush the entire stain with Blood Red.
Example:

Step 7: Stipple Blood Red onto the blade to get the effect of blood droplets.
Example:

Step 8: Drybrush red ink over the entire area to get a liquid-ish look.
Example:

There you have it. Takes about 10 mins to do the whole thing. Sorry for the first couple of pictures.

Any comments or Questions just ask.

Baron

Sorry baron but that really doesn't look like blood at all, it just looks like the sword and part of the hand/forearm has been painted red. Blood (when it's stained things) is not so vibrant, generally a darker red or even brown colour, neither does it cover the surface like that.

And how many bloodied weapons have you seen, nanolathe? Not many, I assume from your comments.

I assure you, a sword dripping with blood will look like that. Blood is commonly bright red, and so it will be rather vibrant.

Good tut, Baron.

Nanolathe, be more sure of yourself before so un-diplomatically criticising someone's work. You have an opinion that you are free to express, so I won't remove your post, but you need to be more diplomatic about it next time. Consider this an unofficial and public warning, I won't have a lack of diplomacy inciting flaming.

Biologically speaking unless blood has been present for a good long while it will ALWAYS be bright red, because of the oxygen bonding properties of haemoglobin oxygenated blood is a rather vibrant red. If you look at your own body you'll see that the blood flowing through your veins looks a darker red than that flowing through arteries as its relatively de-oxygenated, but once blood comes into contact with the air it turns the same shade of red no matter what area its being shed from.

I will say though that I think you could improve your method if the handle of the blade wasn't quite so gore covered, other than that its a good tutorial which I will no doubt use on my planned ork army in the future.

Yes encrusted blood and gore is MUCH MUCH different. I suppose after seeing the confusion caused by it I should have just called this tutorial "bloody weapons" or something like that. But I didnt want it to ge confused with Relliks thread. Since his is good as well. For this guy I was going for the look like he just stabbed someone. So I guess its partly my fault but thanks anyway for respondign guys.

nice tute there BvL. you could use a drybrush to "flick" some red onto areas surrounding the main gore to show arterial spray and the like (basically load up the brush and run your finger accross the tip of the bristles so that the paint flies off in the direction you want)

Ya all those steps can be tailored to you're individual liking. I think it turned out well for that particular Iron Warrior but I wouldn't follow it exactly for other models, I was just trying to make a helpful outline that has plenty of room for tweaking.

Thanks guys,
BvL

with Mart and Warchild, never be afraid to show off something you think may be helpful to others. Nevermind if its unconvincing to some... With any kind of art you may ever produce, there will always be critics, always...

The point of tuts no matter how, " amature " or " professional " they may be, is to share exsisting or new ideas with others. As we all come from different artistic backgrounds and experience, everyone has something different to bring to the table.

What ya produced was spot on dude. Of course there is always room for improvement, but that goes for everyone. Keep up the good work dude +rep

I like the idea, but I think that there is a little too much blood. But then again, it IS a chaos space marine, so it balences out. But it's really well put out, and now I have to ry it on my stuff. If I ever get around to it....
