Default Painting Tutorial: Red Lenses

Hey everybody today I'm bringing you my method for painting red goggle lenses like the ones on my Death Korps gasmasks. I haven't tested it and I only know for sure it works with red but I have a feeling this will work with most other colors as well. This is an easy three step process that requires little skill and takes about 4 mins total. I recommend doing this close to the beginning of the painting process as you'll have better results if you arent afraid to go "outside the lines" and this can be hard when the lenses are the last thing you do. It will also allow you to correct any mistakes made fairly easily. The example is one of the 'lost' 2 Death Korps troopers from Second Squad

You will need three GW paints for this process:

Blood Red, Black Ink, and Red Ink

Start:

Step 1: Paint the lense Blood Red

Step 2: Do a quick light drybrush of black ink over the lense

Step 3: Paint the entire lense with Red Ink and let dry. As the Ink is watery its important to get sort of a "bubble" in the lense that way when it dries and the water evaporates you'll have a nice glass like finish.

Questions and Comments are welcoem and hope this helps some of you some how.

Baron

Personally I paint lenses as you might paint a Gem.
But thanks anyway. This is easy for those who don't have such a steady hand as I do

Nice job there Bvl... A good job, but it's also quick and won't take all day long. Personally any Kriegsman who's been in a trench wouldn't have nice shiny goggles, so this tutorial shows off the character of the army better.

Nano.. You've had 3 warnings... Site policy is if we have to issue another on, it's accompanied by a temporary ban of 7 days minimum. You are fairly helpful around here, but rules are rules, Smarten up. Now.

BvL - Great tut!!! It is quick and easy!!!! It not the way I do lenses ( I perfer the 'Ard coat varnish for the shine!) But I have not seen a quicker way for good lenses than this. Perfect for rank and file (all my lenses are for special char also....)

now would this work on Space marines??? they are a little more tricky, and how do you get the ink to STAY ON THE LENS????

It might but I wouldnt attempt it unless you left your self time to clean it back up. So in other words do it first. The key is dulling down the blood red first and then going back and making it "shine". I cant see why it wouldnt work for marines but it will probably require more clean up.

Thanks for the comments everyone, and so sorry I cant paint as well as you nano.

Great tut mate, but I'm going to have to go with nano on this one... I will say that this tut might be more suited to IG lenses, as opposed to SM ones.

Rubbish, you can apply this to any lense! This is a good general tut for eye pieces generally.

I do somthing similar for my Eldar and they have tiny eye pieces!

LOL Mart!!! I was asking as I would think the ink would pool in the eyesockets and be disasterous. PM me about it or do a tut yourself. Im thinking you must put something in your inks......

lol, I do actually, I put Klear (cant remember the American name, Star something!?) which helps the surface tension or something! Didnt mean to sound harsh btw!! I just dont like the negative tone (not by you Monkey) when somebody has put there time into sharing what and how they do something for us all to see.

The point of the tut's is to have a library of skills and tips for everyone to refer to, some you will use some you wont, but quite often even if you dont use one word for word you may take an aspect of it and apply it to something or something else.

- again, I didn't mean to sound harsh

with ya on this!!! with mine I take the time to paint the lenses like gems and varnish them carefully. I also have a MAX of 15-20 in an army. NOW A DKoK or Steel Leigion (which is what Im wanting to do) you have that many X2 in each platoon. Not a very fun YEAR painting each lens. I like this tut and have been looking for a quicker way to de SM lenses, as the lenses look flat whith only one coat but are too time consuming for a discounted paint on an army.

Well I do a mix of BvL and gem, but I will also add a dot of white and and a dot of blood red mixed with a bit of yellow to the other end of the lens. It's important to keep the main colour of the lens dull. So it's simalr but I exaggerate it a little.

-Though BvLs lenses are bigger, so the dot of white would not work, but would on a smaller eye piece.

Well DKoK might have to wait. I already have a sizeable SL army to paint but I LOVE the FW models for DKoK. Just a bit prcey for me. Now I'll have to sweet talk the wifie MAYBE we could swing it but my budget for the year is lost........
