Default Big up the Shoulders.

Yo to you all.

Well, thanks to Deadcommando the marine truescale revolution is well and truely underway. So i thought i'd add my own contribution, in the shoulder area. You can use this simple how-to guide on non-truescale marines as well, so if you want to add a bit of muscle to the Emperor's Finest look no further. It's also a good way to add raised rims to the shoulder guards of sergeants and characters.

Here's what you'll need;

*Clippers
*1 decent knife (not like this one!).
*1 needle file.
*Some plasticard, known as sheet styrene in americaland. 1mm thick for truescale, 0.5 for non-trues.
*1 Space Marine shoulder pad (dur).
*Plastic glue and a fairly blunt pencil (not shown).
*Fine sandpaper (optional).

Begin by clipping out a small square of plasticard slightly bigger, at least 4mm, than the shoulder pad. Glue the pad to the plasticard and leave it to dry for a while.

Once the glue is dry, draw around the pad with the blunt pencil. I use a blunt pencil because it gives you a bigger outline. Clip roughly around the outside of this outline with your clippers, then file down the rough corners using the outline as a guide. Clip the plasticard flush with the back of the pad.

To hollow out the inside cut out a triangle with your clippers like this,

and use you knife to gently and carefully shave the excess plasticard away until its level with the inside of the pad. WARNING! If there's any point during this whole procedure that you're likely to loose blood/digits, its now. Be very careful!
It should now look something like this,

Now you can repeat the whole process with the other side, making a pad that is bigger all round or leave it as it is. i've repeated the whole thing because i want a big shoulder look.

If you're not happy with the raised look you can always file the plasticard flat against the existing rim on the shoulder pad, and if you want a super smoothe finish use some fine sandpaper after filing.

Hope y'all found that interesting and helpful.

good stuff.

i just realised this process is also really good for doing deathwatch or chaos style pads with the high ridge - just use a thinner piece of plasticard, and cut it ****her from the rim.

yep that'll work too. just do the upright side with some 0.5mm or thinner and shape it as it reaches the bottom. i also forgot to mention that if you want a smoothe transition rather than a right-angle you can squidge (technical term) some gs in there with the edge of a tooth pick.

yep, exactly the same procedure for the bottom as for the side. as for finding plasticard, check ebay or run a google search for it, that should turn up something. if you're uk then i got a couple of sites that sell it over the net, just ask and i'll pm ya.

you justread my thoughts - i was looking at a unassembld land raider i have and the insane thought of truescaling it to go with my world eaters crossed my mind.

im shivering even now

as far as im concerned, its not worth the hassle (with normal truescale models the vehicles will do - with my new one they are crap. a land raider stood next to that world eater im working on looks like a rhino! lol... hmm, good idea!)

hmmm...i was thinking of bulking out the tracks by adding a layer of miraclecard...i mean plasticard... between the links and the track assembly to increase the height and spacing between the chassis and track assemblies for some added width. seems fairly simple to my naive mind but i'm sure there's some hidden pitfall waiting to trip me.

hmmmf...in your case it might be better to scratch build a transport. a friend of mine started scratch building a baneblade by precisely measuring all the dimensions on a fw resin one and plotting it out on graph paper as plans. maybe you could do something similar but increase all the measurements by say 10-15% or whatever.

just a thought.

Truescaling a vehicle would be quite difficult. To begin with, they're not even scaled to the rest of the minies. Ever notice that all vehicle drivers/gunners are smaller than all your other models?

I'm convinced a truescale rhino would be the size of a landraider if not bigger...

it depends on the truescale.

if its the standard add-some-spacers-to-the-legs truescaling (the one in my tutoiral), i think the existing vehicles are fine, and the bikes would actually look better (the marine would be able to rest his feet on the ground while seated, as opposed to now!)

though the insane truescale version (the one im painting up at the moment as a world eater) i think youre right. one of my land raiders stood next to that marine looks anout the right size for a rhino, give or take a cm here and there

thats a big project mind you and i the guy who tries it

Well if you put normal marine models next to a rhino there's no way in hell you'd fit ten of them in there...and that's without their equipment.

The landraider on the other hand could easily hold ten of them though why you'd come out the front ramp is beyond me....

Ok lets put this in perspective.

You have a tank A.

Tank A has one massive door at the front and two other doors one on either side.

From hatch at front you can see clearly to the engine at the back... and since the idea is to charge directly at the enemy, one good shot would kill everyone in the transport and blow the engine to hell.

Whereas if you disembark from the side doors, you come out behind the main guns and can advance with a wall of armour and a heavy hail of fire between you and the enemy. Think survival and not blowing up the expensive/rare tank here...

Hairy.. I like the way this looks. Almost like a flak guard type of plating that chaos has.. Have you thought of adding studs to it anywhere? I saw a rather intricate conversion once that had the studs being GS'd wolf skulls. Wolfpack has one on the knee of a termie that would do nicely as an example. Might be kinda a cool idea when you model that wolf lord or rune priest!

cant find plasticard??? Look no further than the BEWARE OF DOG & FOR SALE SIGNS. Granted theyre a little thinner, but for the price I can easily double up.
Downside: no texture.
