How to make: Necron Ash Waste/Goo/Crystal Bases Pt1

Hello all!
Recently (since I've joined 40kTerra) people have been asking me how I do my slime and crystal bases. This guide will show you how.
BTW its not just limited to Necrons; its also quite usefull for Nurgle or Industrial bases.

Well.... here goes.

If you dont care about making crystals, Ignore green sections.
Step 1:
Pick your base and figure to be mounted. In this case; the large base w/ bottom section of Wraith.

Step 2:
Decide where you're going to mount said mini. And prepare the area. Since the mini I've chosen has a mounting peg; I drilled a hole to mount it thru.

Step 3:
Apply SuperGlue to the base in a random pattern. BTW: random pattern is an oxymoron!

Step 4:
Sprinkle the SG with Kitty Litter or small pebbles. Allow to dry fully while you work on the next step!

Step 5: Crystals
Get your green sprue and butcher it in this fashion. The goal is to have 3 legnths of "rod" per sprue. Save the extra, I'll show you what to do with it in another guide!

Step 6:
Using a file or sandpaper, put points on each end of the rod, using the flats as a guide for placement.Yes, Yes, I know crystals arent 4 sided, but this is DIY, and the angles of the sprue make it convincing!

Step 7:
Use a pair of dikes ("diagional cutters" for those "SENSITIVE" people) or xacto knife to cut small nicks in various places *on the edges*.


Step 8:
Cut your rods in half *roughly* to get 2 crystals from each rod.Vary the lengths!

Step 9:
Now that your SG has dried; use a crap brush to knock off any loose stone. Apply more stone in desired areas, and completely coat w/ SG. Allow to dry.

Step 10:
Take a small ball of dried GS and cut in half: this will form "bubbles" in the slime. For bigger bubbles, get some fake grapes from your local store (@ $1) these will make LARGE bubbles!
SG bubbles to base in a few spots Dont go overboard: Less is More!

Step 11:
AFTER SG has dried, prime the base Black. I use Krylon ultra-flat black spray paint. Then Drybrush w/ dark grey and light grey.

Step 12:
Use bright green paint to fill in areas you desire "GOO" Use a yellow/green mix to color bubbles, getting lighter in color as you reach the top.

Step 13:
Apply your mini to the base. If you dont want it integrated into the "goo", wait till the end!

Step 14:
Put 2 SMALL drops of light green or yellow paint in a soda cap or medicine cup. DONT USE TOO MUCH OR THE RESIN WILL NOT BE CLEAR!! Add a small amount of Water Effect I use Terra Scenics and stir whilst pulling upwards on stirrer. (this will give you a "whispy" look of color when done properly) NOTE: The amoun I've shown is enough to do 20+ bases! A little goes a long way!

Step 15:
Use a tooth-pick or small piece of wire to drip small globs onto the green areas & pull the goo where you want it. Dont worry about it being too much, as it dries, it will shrink (not from the sides tho, i suppose *deflate* is a better term.) Be carefull not to let WE drip off around the edge!DO NOT USE A PAINTBRUSH OR TOUCH THE GREEN PAINT!! It will "pull off" leaving black spots in your "goo"

It should look like this when you're done. Apply a few coats. (give each coat at least 90min to dry before re-application.) When you're done w/ WE *or between coats* cover it w/ saran wrap or another sealer.

Step 16:
Pick a few of your Crystals and SG them to the base. (*REMEMBER*: Less is More!!) After the SG dries; reinforce them w/ PVA or any other clear drying glue.

Step 17 FINAL:
Using black paint, go around the edges of your base, cleaning up the edge of any stray color. (if WE drips over, cut it off w/ exacto) Any "hazing" on crystals (from SG) can be scratched off using fingernail or xacto (carefully)Your completed base should look something like this:

Wonderful tutorial for Goo, I suppose it could be used for lava too?

hmm, havent tried. I imagine that you could use xacto or wire to "pull" WE into peaks or crests when its about to set.

wouldn't the lava be more of a layer effect so doing one layer then 2nd not fully covering the 1st etc lava doesnt really peak like waves unless its a big erruption. at least from what i've seen of pics from lava fields in hawaii and others.

too true... but bubbles could be pulled also

Ooooh, cool basing thing! It might be fun to do some guardsmen running away from a wraith on a base like that.
