Default Terrain Competition

So folks, time to action another competition.

Terrain building.

Plans so far: None
Theme: none
Start time: April (gives everyone time to source materials)

So here are my suggestions.

Terrain size (base): 10" x 10"
Theme: City
Restrictions: A maximum of 50% of the model can be created from the CoD ruin kits. You can use anywhere up to here as you like.

The rest of the kit must be from salvaged or basic stock (eg, foam core, plasticard, pink/blue foam, baked bean cans, card.... you get the drift). This means a minimum of the terrain must be salvaged or basic stock.

Any other thoughts before fully actioning this competition? I'd like to get this finalised by Friday 08/02/08 so that we all have time to source our stock, think of the scene and set plans.

Thoughts?

Not to be offtopic on purpose but...

If this is in April we`re holding another conversion comp in march?

(3 or so people are already willing to have another one as soon as march :P)

Can`t wait to see what terrain people come up with

Just one question?

How will you be able to tell the % ? )

Tis a toughie, I think we have to trust our fellow entrants to be honest. Also is the majority of the model looks like a GW CoD kit, we can be pretty sure it's more than 50%.

I also think at the start of the competition, everyone posts a pic of their supplies laid out (you can then have some fun trying to guess where some of the items have been incorporated).

This comp can be pushed back to May/June if we need to, though I don't want to let it go stagnant.

We need more people online to talk about schedules

More than a couple of people (at least 4, 5 if hairy doesn`t have a break down) are already willing to have another conversion competition as soon as posible

Templar mikeel (sp?) wants a terain comp asap and there was talk about themed competitions....

I just don`t know anymore.

You know what, what if we have them both in the same month?

Just a thought, even though loads want an additional conversion competition, we should be cautious to over use a single competition. I'd probably say hold the conversion comp till a later date.

Does the terrain have to a specific theme? If you make things to specific you get less people enter. It should be who can make the best piece of terrain - with a few guidelines on material imo.

True, I'm just thinking for the judging... that way it's apples for apples as opposed to apples to oranges.

Though there is no reason why we can't open it out further, I'm just trying to get the ideas going first. I see this week as the planning week.

Wakim - they can always wait for the next be it a few months down the line... it builds excitement.

how about just some sort of ruined building? have seprate sections fully sctatched built and using sets from GW can be the other. decent size like a corner section and part of a wall? time limit can be a month and a 1/2 maybe for some who have a pretty good size section so they have enough time painting.

I think we should go for a strict base size so that it avoids the conflict of someone doing a small wall section and someone doing a full non-modular board

I’m in either way, but my suggestion is that perhaps a ruin is a bit run of the mill. Not too much room for variation all in all. (no offence meant)

My suggestion would be that the entry is some form of command structure, no more than 2 storeys high (using the CoD guide to level height)

What do you guys think?

Well, I don't want to tag it into a specific structure, it can be command station, a ruin, a complete building. It's based on creating a city piece.

This way (creating a building (for the first comp)) the terrain piece can then be used the users board. A city doesn't have to just e a concrete jungle, There could be a city within a jungle, A desert city, an Ork village... etc... etc.

Just a theme to et things roughly the same not stem creativity too much. If this comp goes well we can look at producing various mini comps on specific projects.

I am game for this comp too. I think we need to narrow it to a race city (Imperial, Ork, Tau....) and have pics to prove it is not more than 50% COD terrain. other than that I think its a good plan and can't wait to get it on!!!

Default Re: Terrain Competition

Here's how I wanted it to run when I had thought of it.. First of all, restricting the kind of terrain it is to a command structure or a ruin isn't the way to do it. Secondly, talking with Ikarus we had the idea that we would give march as an off month (maybe have a fiction contest then, 40k fluff).. Then, in april, we do the terrain comp, then in May, start the whole cycle over.

I do however, agree it should be a building.

@wakim: There will be no conversion contest until May at the earliest. /deadhorse

@Krom: Catch me on MSN so we can come up with some judging rules and the like. There's been a bit of dis-satisfaction expressed at the way the two previous ones were marked, so we need to iron that out.

I'll make sure some preliminary rules are posted on this as soon as Krom and I speak on it. Until then, consider this competition pending.

Great, as you may have all seen the comp is going to go on hold for awhile.

Don't weep for this loss folks as it will arrive, it just means we can get this ironed out before we get started.

Some great suggestions so far, keep them coming.

I'm liking the concept of loosening the constraints... only on theme (we need to control the amount of pre-bought terrain items being used) and atmosphere and stuff.

So the theme would be... City - This can be any type of building you want
Style (eg. imp city, ork hut...) - Applicable to your board
Base - 10" x 10"
Restrictions: A maximum of 50% of the model can be created from the CoD ruin kits. You can use anywhere up to here as you like.

The rest of the kit must be from salvaged or basic stock (eg, foam core, plasticard, pink/blue foam, baked bean cans, card.... you get the drift). This means a minimum of the terrain must be salvaged or basic stock.

Start time: August / September timeframe.
