actually if you flip through your second edition rule book you will see an illustration that looks pretty cool.

well, considering that a commissar is a UC and pretty much makes any unit he's attached to fearless, i don't mind paying the pts for him! the +1Ld bonus he gives to officers/sergeants coupled with our insanely cheap company standard's re-roll gives us a 24" Ld9/10 buffer with re-rolls! add to that the fact the commissar can take a power fist and not be picked out...
i think for what they do they're a decent price... sure they're not as fighty as a priest, but your men will be far less likely to run off!

medics right now are next to useless... the only reason to take one is if you load up on plasma guns in your command section.

techpriests simply need to not have their servitors counted as wargear! give them a strait 0-4 or 0-5 servitor retinue option and perhaps a rhino or razorback for a different and special transport option??!

as for a few of the things that could use some tonning down in my opinion;
- drop troops. in fact, i feel that each and every doctrine should have a pts cost associated with it, or else it should affect your list options in some way! (ie: drop troops should prevent you from having anything heavier than a sentinel in your list!)

- iron discipline. for less than the cost of a basic guardsman, it's stupid good! near marine equivilent Ld which has a 24" range per officer?! (keep in mind you get 12" in any direction from the officer's squad!)

cheers!

of everything, a 5 point guardsmen sounds the best. my friends 6 point orks roll over my infantry lists horribly. the buggers are muchs harder to take down when you dont outnumber them.

yea seriously. the new ork boyz are like combat beasts on drugs, they're so ridiculously powerful for less than dirt cheap. 5 points would make a huge difference, and i'm not being sarcastic. even in my [planned] 1k list of mechanized guard, that would save me probably upwards of 50 points...:]
as for some of the broken rules that stitch pointed out, i wouldn't object to some of those things costing points. i know when i was building my army, i ONLY took the traits that are free. hey, i'm a budget gamer :P

I'd like to see rhinos in the guard list. They'd be cool to pack on storm troopers squads too.Even though we get the chimera which is on of the best transports out there.Anyone notice how according to IA vol 1 Chimeras can carry as much terminators as land raiders?

gotta say I am not to worried about a new codex. hope they get rid of the rough riders in favor of bikes maybe with a hvy bolter or autocannon on it would be nice. I do not feel loosing the hellhound would be a big deal but then i do not field it anyway so I guess my oppinion wouldent count much... id like to see sniper rifels in the armoury not as a doctorin choice but her thata just me.........

This is a side note, sorry...

My rough riders are mounted on Cold Ones (velociraptors).

I can't see them pulling Rough Riders. They're guardsmen units, and always have been. Thats like saying all the lasguns and leman russes suddenly stopped working and are being replaced with autoguns and predators. How do you rationalize them stopping use of a peice of equipment for no reason? Especially since, as Spiky here says, you CAN put them on ATV's and the like. I'm beginning to wish I thought of the the ATV thing before i mounted them on lizards.

Another cool Rough Rider Mount I've thought of are Sabertusks from Ogre Kingdoms, but you would need a good way of getting them. I would think that they are expensive as hell.

Oh yes, and I'm full on in favor of the 5 point guardsman. It seems to fit, there actually expensive for what they do nowadays. I think they did an awesome job of fixing and bringing back the orks though.

Who said they were coming out with a new Guard book soon?

umm 5 point guardsmen sounds good. and a wheeled vehicle for rough riders, I think I will have to make some of those. I think IG no matter what are the best but then I have gone over board. A new codex no problem here. I am glad my wife does not mind 5000+ points for an army. I have all of the guard armies now.

Plastic with great coats would be nice. Another army to collect.

IG FOREVER!

Is it just me or should orks out number guardsmen tough.I would like to see that Ld bonus do more in the next.I never played as or against guard thinking I would have Lost/won If it weren't for the ld Bonus.I don't even carry vox casters as they add up very fast.Did guard always get vox casters or was their a time where guard officers and Independent characters cost less?

Man Im scared...!!!

NO MORE DROP TROOPERS!! At least NOT for Free!

I have a feeling the whole douctrine thing is going to be trashed or messed with. Hardened Vets are going to be messed up.

Anyways I just see how GW takes current good units, trash them, then takes the lesser units and make them betters

Oh btw, Would Rough Riders be chopped??

I think the only thing scary about a new codex is if their tanks become better or if their flashlights are stronger

I love roughriders, they look good on the field and are classic cavarly. What would Tallarans do without them. I hope they dont remove them instead why not BRING BACK SQUATS. Even just a a sub-human troop choice for Guard like Ratlings or Orgryns.

Isn't it great that on we can actually say the word Squats without the thread getting locked. I wouldn't want Squats in the Guard book though. I'm still sitting tight for a Squat army to come back. I'm also right there if they ever re-release Chaos Dwarves. I will be the king of re-continued Stunties.
I just hope that I don't hate 5th edition as much as the rumors are making me think I will and that 5th edition is well understood before they come out with the new book. The worst possible scenario I can imagine is an army that works well in 4th but poorly in 5th once everyone gets a good grip on the system.

im fairly confident GW will be staying away from s asteampunk image, sicne the look for IG is pretty established

apart from the aforementioned greatcoats, plastic kasrkin (just like the current metal ones) are to be expected.

biggest rumour ive heared (which i hate) is that guardsmen may be going down to 4 points each. yes 4 points

isn't that good though, you get more in your army.

my gripes/groans are as follows

1. KEEP THE DAMN PLATOONS!
platoon formations are awsome like awsome was on manergy (see below) if they make a guard troops choice 1 squad of guard, i will personally lead a group of my fellows in an effort to assasinate the makers of the new codex. (joking)

i also want to see something like a warthog in IG. i mean, krieg have them, why shouldn't we?

i want the following to be plastic

mordians
karskrin
tallarns (please update them, they look awful imo)
vallhallans

I know something that Ig could use,

If anyone has played command and conquer yuri's revenge the flaktrak tanks would be a fine specimen, imagine this.

Small vehicle, fast attack, closed top, fast vehicle, lightly armored, come in squads of three.

Has a heavy bolter or the option to take a missile launcher or a multilaser.

crewed by two ig and have an all round armor of 10. BS 3

I've never seen a salamander so i'm unsure if this is a similar model or not.
