And if so, did it work like you hoped or get destroyed to easy?

if you do ever intend to use a basilisk to fire directly, give it the armoured crew compartment...

the really huge weakness of the bassie is it's weaker side armour & it's open-topped stat. negating that +1 to all damage rolls can mean the difference between a simple 'immobilised' result or a 'wreaked' result!

cheers!

Bad ideal. You should always hide Basiliks behind cover and bombard away! I used the indirect fire with a Defiler (3rd ed. rules), and it was pretty effective, but I'm terrible at guess range! If someone is really good at guesstimating range, indirect Ordanace weapons can be effective not only when they hit, but they make your opponet stick real close like to cover, thus slowing them down.

well, keep in mind you don't actually "guess" the ranges anymore!

you delcare target as normal, then measure to make sure the target is;
a) over your minimum range.
b) still within your maximum range.
if either range is off, then your shot auto-misses and no scatter/template is used.
otherwise, you scatter as per the rules for firing indirectly. (ie: roll 2D6 & pick highest.)

the main reason i see for taking a direct firing bassie is if you're playing on 4x4 table... with the huge minimum range for the bassie's indirect fire, you'll typically need direct line of sight after turn 2 if you want to shoot anything!

cheers!

When did indirect fire change? I really gotta brush up on the rules. Does the FW varients (with the armoured turret) give Basilisks more armour or just make them not open-topped?

i want to guess that it doesn't upgrade the armor, just makes it "closed-topped." wait, does this FW one have a different set of rules from simply a bassie with an armor compartment ? intriguing... :P

IIRC the forgeworld kit is simply the armoured crew compartment upgrade??? (don't have any of the forgeworld books myself!)

the rules for 'guess' range weapons were changed in the 4th edition rulebook due to the following reasons;
a) it's simpler and allows for faster game-play
b) so many people were cheating under the actual "guess the range to the intended target" rule of 3rd edition!

cheers!

I was asking because I was thinking of using some for my IG. My IG army's homeworld is going to be one that fights nid's alot, and thought fluff and gameplay-wise they might be alright against a nid army..... maybe.

you wouldn't need to fire directly at a nid swarm tbh, in all likelyhood, even if you scatter the maximum 6" you will probably still hit something.

in fact, fluffwise, heavy vegetation is the order of the day when a hive fleet comes a knocking, so plenty of indirect fire would help you, and slow them down.

Basilisks and morters should serve you well

Theoretically a Basilisk without indirect fire might be a good fire support unit for your Guardsmen squads. Of course I've never tried this, so if I'm wrong please slap me.

I used one somtimes, but two most of the time. They seem to be effective but for the most part I am switching over to Leman Russes (2) and a Griffon. I like the griffon because its cheap indirect fire, and the Leman Russ' armour cant be beat

Firing a Basilisk indirectly is just called 2nd turn. I wouldn't recommend taking basilisks without it in larger games because you might need a very opportunistic ordnance blast in a place where you cannot get to. 4'x4' games where you will probably have no indirect fire after the first turn you can afford to save the 25 points, depending on the army you are facing.

If you are going to not have the inderect option, you need to run at least two if not three. Spreads the shots coming in at them a bit and who doesn't like three Ordance templates anyway!

I'd second the armored compartment if you have the points for it.

yes I have and No it did not I did it a few times and I have come up with a way to make it work. heavy weapons teams lascannonx3 are the key positioning is the key you want to start as close as you can to a benificial position. on the bright side it is a ap2 weapon and without guess range it is not guess range

I suppose it might work if you gave the bassie some support on the sides. I don't know, a meatshield. You know. Imperial Guard. They're a good meatshield. But other than that I can't see a way that the bassie can survive. It'd be taken out pretty quickly if flanked.
