Default how do you use your commissars

I love my commissars, they are a staple of my army, and I usually field one in every command squad. The shooting of the officer kinda sucks but hes replaced by ld 10! I usually bring them with a bolt pistol and powerfist. They can't be picked out in fight and I've surprised fellow players by pulling out a handful of powerfist attacks just when he thought it was all over.
I've also seen them end up mono on mono with some of the nastiest creatures (deamonprinces a prime example) and win (despite the rest of the squad going squish) and then wander off to take someone else on.
I only wish i could give them Iron discipline too!
Does anyone else use them differently or at all?

having read through the IG codex [but not started an army, only planning and army list writing] i thought it would be awesome to use commisars with conscripts. their crappy leadership is boosted more than double, to ten, and than means dirt cheap cannon fodder than don't run from anything but the freakiest stuff...and can shoot :] sure, conscripts have a horrible BS but with anywhere from 20-50 models in a squad, they will hit something right ? haha

the only downsides are that you need at least 2 other commisars: one for the HQ officer and the other for a required troops junior officer, and they are a little pricey. but hey, i'm not complaining :] it's true, the death of the officer sucks, but i think on my list i tried to avoid a massive points sink at his death by going light on officers.

:]

I use them very much like you but with bolt pistols and Power weapons.

I rarely use a pfist on any S3 character.

The Ld 10 is awesome and I like to use my 2 extra commissars(since I have two infantry platoons) to attach to my dedicated "sacrifice squads" who are meant to get in the way of any incoming strong melee unit and buy the bulk or my army time to reposition.

I also like to give them meltas to take out the ocassional dreadnought

And for the Conscripts thing, you can take Independant Commissars and then just directly attach them to the Conscript squads.

P. swords are good, but actually, after thinking about it (and using one in a small game) a I think a P. Fist is better because you already have a horrible I, (so your going to go before most "decent" units) and you aren't an IC! Plus, S6 means you can kill MCs easily enough.

mm that's an interesting idea, and i'd thought about it but i've used up my doctrine points already so i can't >__>

but MoW brings up some good points: their I isn't that great, so why not a powerfist ? and the great thing about commisars in maxed out conscript platoons: technically 50 something wounds! yay..well at least from the shooting phase.

Well I use them as advisors.

The commissars are the only ones in a Guard army worthy of the power fist (ignoring veterans' sarge here).
He can't be picked out and therefore with a nice meatshield of 4 soldiers has enough time to activate it (take a medic along with you and he has 5 wounds before he is a target).

But I use him for counterattack purposes only.
And because commissars might not be worth their points... but they are too fluffy/cool not to take into your army. The +1 LD for your officer is another nice bonus.

with their bolt pistols pointed directly at my officer's head?!

actually it really works too! my 1st company commander has yet to fail a moral check and get his head blown off - much to my chigrin sadly... i enjoy the mental image of excatly what a bolt shell at close range does to somebody's melon, er, head!

cheers!

I have a comissar and am still developing the doctrines (i'm tempted to take away storm troopers, for grenediers and also grab up the Indy Coms. Still thinking about it though)

Just stick a command squad within 12" of the conscripts and it works as well as indipendant commissars without using a doctrine.

commissars, brilliant units in the fluff, and for 50pts not bad at all.
When i used to play guard i used my comissar in small games. say between 400pts and 1000pts. he came in really handy, in the smaller games i would attach him to an armoured fist squad, and give him a powerfist and the sgt of the sqd an honorifica imerpialis, yes i know its 25pts down the crapper the second i fail a LD check, but more often than not he passed, meaning, should i get into combat I'd have two fairly hard units in combat that could turn the tide with power weapons.
its a strat that dosent always work, but i enjoy using it, just because i find the image of the commissar shooting a guy with a honorifica funny.

Dunno what dex you use but in mine a commissar costs only 40 pts.

There are two options for your commissars:
Either take them as advisors or as IC.

The latter comes in handy when you want to keep consripts in combat.
But pretty useless in other squads.
Armoured fist: As a IC he can easily be picked out as a armoured fist squad doesn't have enough numbers.
Ogryns: Keep Ogryns in combat by shooting one... is it worth it?

As an advisor a commissar will be predestined to wear a power fist.
He and the hardened veterans' sergeant are the only ones within your guard army who can't be picked out and therefore will use their power fists.
A commissar is great as well to keep morale up and running. Well he was trained for this in the first place.
So stick him with your HSO and you can be sure to have this 9 Ld bubble.
Because any tests your HSO has to make he has +1 Ld due to the commissar looking over his shoulder.
They might be not the cheapest option but they are surely one of the most characterful units on the table.
