grunts, more grunts, yet more grunts and yes, even more grunts!!!
basically, the guard is all about numbers... you can always achieve far more with more men than slightly better equiped men!

another thing to always bear in mind; we're specialists! WE'RE NOT SPACE MARINES!!! don't for example, throw a lascannon into an infantry and expect it to go tank-hunting... BS3 is 'average' at best! instead of wasting those other 9 guys to simply miss that tank, give the infantry squad a heavy bolter and let it go do what it was designed to do; kill enemy infantry!
leave tank-hunting for example to more specialised units like storm troopers, hardened vets, support squads and/or tailored platoon command squads...

basically, when you design your list, give each and every single unit a dedicated battlefield role and then give them the upgrades to do it well!

cheers!

well you want to make sure you have 34 guardsmen 2 officers and a chimera. thats the minimum for feilding an army.

well... technically you can go the cheap rout of doctrines and take your command officer + squad & 2x 5-man grenadier squads!lol.
not very effective at all, but hey, it is still a legal army!

cheers!

Buy the Battleforce and the Basilisk you should be set, then another troop box.

That should keep you solid for a while
