Default independant commisars

if a commisar is independant the rule says he takes up an HQ slot, could he be the commander?

If you take the Independant Commisars doctrine, then the Commisars take up an Elite slot.

Also the HQ section says 1-2 showing that its a min. of one command squad.. (you may want to double check that but Im 90% positive.).

Also Yes he does become an Elite Choice when hes independent.

No you must still take a command squad.

Yes you can have him join any squad he wants.

He does not fill an HQ slot.

Up to 3 can be taken in this way, they fill only 1 Elite slot.

Im pretty sure that is how it goes.

Interesting, however I really cannot see why anyone would forgo one of the strongest unit in the IG army IMO. With a main command squad, you can take 5 support squads. In those 5 support squads you can have quite a variety of weapons, up too 6 of any 1 type of heavy weapon (lascannon's, mortars, heavy bolters, ect) and up to 3 Sentinels. Not only that it gives you the option of a having a Chimera. Where else in the codex can you see the diversity of options which are available in the Headquarter section of your army?

That seemed in irrelevant statement Lord Marcus, no-ones mentioned the Mechanised Doctrine.

But back to the Last Chancers - look at it this way Grix, the Last Chancers allow you to have up to (IIRC) 11 heavy weapons OR 22 assault weapons OR 22 sanctioned Psykers OR 22 Snipers OR 22 hard-ass stormbolter+carapace armoured nutcases.
Add to that that you get Schaffer and Kage as standard and you can have up to 5 Chimeras and the Sub-units rule allowing breaking the lot up into anything from all of them in one squad to 1 on their own.

Im not saying anything against Last Chancer's, I like them, they saved quite a bit of points for me at Ard'Boyz. I took a couple of sub-units, Kage and Schaeffer in one, 3 snipers, 4 lascannons, and 2 demo charges, a total of 5 subunits. They proved to be very good, especially Schaeffer as an anti-cc deterant. The guy is crazy. Im just saying that the command platoon has alot of good options that can be used.

i was reffering to grix's comment on that the command platoon can take a chimera and mostly all other units in the list can not.

The only problem with Chancers is that IMO they are a bit pricy. But after looking at it for a while, chancers are quite nice. Although I think that using them as a counter assault unit is a bit more bite. If you can get them into assault, Schaeffer and Kage leading a unit of 10 last chancer's each with a power weapon would put a dent in just about any unit. While only an initiative of 3, the fact that they have 2 attacks each and can take power weapons makes them leathal. Only if they were WS4.
