RR in general aren't worth the points, though being a silly fluff man, if the option were there, i'd take them in a heartbeat!!!! However, game play/game wise, in relation to effectiveness and pts. efficiency, you'd be much better off with sentinels or hell hounds.

My opinion is different. They are cheap points, IMO. And can wipe out a threat in CC.

They are counterassault. Yes they have a one hit wonder, but that one hit wonder will kill what it will assault, which is critical, when you play the cards right.

It could mean a difference between some nasty CC squad continuing into your flank, and not.

well, the riders do have the 'fleet' USR so you could always use them as fast tank-hunters by giving the squad 2 meltaguns & melta bombs on the vet sergeant... they can nip up the board in a timely manner, or else pop outta seemingly nowhere and next turn bag an unwarry enemy tank!

I use 10. 9 with hunting lances and a vet. with a Power Weapon. Its a nice surprise to the enemy when they get the charge. Cause they Need that charge. SO in turn if you have a nasty termi squad or monsterous creature threatening your lines then you use them to counter charge.

If they don't get the charge, their Hunting Lances count as power weapons in the first round of h-t-h.
Plus people like to get rid of rough Riders quickly if they're facing them, leaving the rest of your troops somewhat out of the firing line for a short while.

Well the hardest part for me is having the discipline to hold them back until its the right time to charge. Most of the time I get a little carried away and charge the lines, and results them getting mowed down

the main problem though is that the rough riders aren't that difficult to kill... a single heavy bolter support squad for example or tailored platoon HQ can easily wreck the RR's on their own.

perhaps if they were a bit more resilient such as T4 or a 3+ save for a decent pts increase they might be a bit more of a threat...
as of right now, i'd never use them beyond background purposes as they're not a greatly competitive unit.

Exactly, which is why they are exclusively a counter charge unit. You cannot shoot through a combat. So you need to have those RRs sitting behind your lines/behind cover and charging your platoons when that assault squad comes out of no where.

And also, thats why I, personally would field 2-3 units of these guys, maybe not a lot of squad size.

I would play full ground force IG.

Well you shoot my RR? I still have my 12+ lascannons., gunning you down.

Personally i'd love to do an appocalypse game that included an entire company of Rough Riders (just sub in with Bretonians for ease!).

Yup.. I've heard rumors of the local store doing a full SM chapter against another!!

That would be a game to see..

I must be getting over my army ADD though.. I have no desire to convert rough riders all of a sudden, even though it would be an awesome army!
