Default what is better

the IG forum has been silent to long. which is better
1 taking the three tanks for the heavy support choices

2 taking a mass of heavy weapons platoons and the drop troops doctorin

3 some ungodly combination of the two.

discuss.

points to discuss are why you make the choice what you would field in it (like battle tanks and basilisk) as well as a basic tactic that makes it sound.

personally I have been fielding three leman russ battle tanks. also I have two fire support squads in attachment to my HQ. because I found tanks are a big target (no supprise there) and I have started using the drop troops doctorine, I have been consitering droping one of the russes and taking a heavy weapons platoon broken down like this

command section
jr officer plasma pistol power weapon
staff 4x plasma guns
drop troops

s1
3x heavy bolters
s2
3x heavy bolters
s3
3x heavy bolters

all three support squads would drop in. also this would give me a fireing line at any objective area. I do not see a downside to loosing the one tank because ordinance misses about 1/3 of the time anyway. also because im getting a mass of heavys to go with the 6 autocannons I already field and the plasma stuff will bring me to like 13 of them in the army. I feel this would more than make up for the power of the russ. in terms of mobility there is no more bennifet than being abel to say ok im here and be there.
I know there is a lot more points being spent on the heavy weappons platoon than the russ butI can make room

I'd have to go with the all Leman Russ option.
Heavy Bolter sponsons all round and one with lascannon.
I love tanks, first and foremost.

Tanks always work better for me than Infantry. Take my braodside suit for example, it couldn't hit the broadside of a Baneblade even if it was parked 6 feet directly in front of it

Third. I have terrible luck when it comes to leadership tests. If any infantry squad of mine are forced to take a leadership test they're practically garunteed to run. I don't have that problem with tanks.

my only point of contention with you on this stubber is that there are 4 squads 3 heavy weapons squads even if you run one out of combat over leader ship you still have 6 heavy bolters 18 shots per turn + plasma weapons. and against toughness 3 opponets or even 4 it wounds on a 2+.

also lascannon on a russ. maybe it is just me but I would (in almost any situation) take three HB over a LC. if I need the extra power battle cannon it up. especially with the fact that you implyied you miss A LOT LC is one shot HB 3 seems a more logical choice with tanks

I don't know if this helps or not, but I played against a drop pod list that used units of sentinels with heavy flamers and when they landed managed to set the whole table on fire. At least that is what it seemed like. Mind you, I was playing my Dark Eldar list, but it was still very devestating. The new rules for tanks, are really going to hit hard, as most all of there weapons are strength greater than 4, not allowing them to move and fire more than one weapon @ only 6".

I may want to stay away from the tanks and use more units with more weapons options.

I would recommend going with 2 Lemans and a Basilisk for your heavies and Sentinals backed up with special weapon squads for the deepstrike. The heavy weapon squads will be stuck on the turn they come in on and will probably lose another turn moving after they get on the table. A special weapon squad with a demo charge and 2 meltas can lay out some serious hurt on the turn it arrives. The sentinals can land in the rear arc of the enemies vehicles, and if they survive the turn of landing, charge into the enemy fire support line to tie up his fire.
The heavy weapon squads should be part of your gunline to support the tanks.
I mentioned the Basilisk because
1) IT'S COOL!
2) It has strength 9 so it will stop a landraider better.

remember that if you take heavy weapons platoons and drop troops there goes 2 of your 5 doctrines. that is too much for me just to field heavy weapons when i can get a chimera with a HB plus any multitude of other tasty heavy weapons plus transport a squad carrying god knows what

point well taken but I do not use a lot of docs anyway and other than drop troops the only skills doc that interests me is hardend fighters

I usually take a Chimera with HB turret and hull HB, and a squad with an AC or ML. 1 squad with 3 good inf. killing shots, plus the special weapon. And, you can take that without doctrines.
