the rankings in Codex:Imperial Guard are abstract guidelines, whereas (i believe) in the previous editions, every rank was given a definitive statline, so you had your Cornell with a Cornell statline and you Lieutenants with a Lieutenant statline.
Whereas now your Cornel has either a SO or HSO statline and your Lieutenants have JO statlines. Allowing for the extreme variety within the guard to be easily represented by players.

So in other words, however you want them to look.

hmmm...i'd say basically model wise, it could just be a plastic IG unit, that has maybe a helmetless head [ie the one that comes in the IG box, or something from the heavy weapons sprue] and maybe a weapons swap, like a bolt pistol or something.

the link above should help ,those are the official GW junior officers, but i think plastics would do just fine substituting those :]

as long as they are at least slightly different from the regular troops, anything you like. give em a hat, give em a coat, give em wargear that normal troopers can't have (power weapons are good for this), as long as your opponent can tell them apart fromt he rest of your army.

With my primary regiment I tend to go with the Grizzled veteran look for my Junior officers. Im used to just calling them Lieutenants after ten years. I use the old metal catachan guy biting down on his cigar while shooting his bolter and a slightly chubby slightly asian looking metal cadian model with a cool shot gun. The shot gun guy killed a greater deamon of Nurgle with the last shot i had in my turn just before he got into assault range. Awsome.
My Vostroyan Juniors are ussually anyone who isn't the crazy cool guy with the bionic leg and the powerfist. Steel Legion is a carousel at times.

Basically Officer type models are officer type models and can be interchanged for one another be they junior or senior. just some guys are too cool to be juniors like Ursarkar Creed and the Vostroyan Senior.
