This is a tough one to answer, as all have their uses and I use all patterns. I'd say I use the Steel legion one the least, and they are probably best used in your HQ with improved comms.

Catachan version is quite awesome if you use it with the drop troops doctrine. Deep strike and BBQ everybody!

Mars and Cadian are probably the best all around. Mars has one more shot and 3 str 6 shots are very good. I probably use cadian the most because of high strength, better AP and the ability to pop transports.

I way prefer the Cadian over anything else! One of my favorite weapons in 40k is the autocannon so, that explains my obsession!

for long-ranged support;
- cadian sentinel. 48" range on the autocannon means you can keep your fragile walker well back from the main fighting while still throwing out some hurt.
plus, those 2 S7 shots are geared towards killing skimmers quick-fast, unlike a single shot rocket launcher or lascannon which is inefficient over-kill as you typically will only ever score glancing hits!

if using the drop troops doctrine;
- add in a catachan sentinel or two in seperate squads. deep striking those heavy flamers is just plain evil... 'chef', my own heavy flamer sentinel costs only 55pts w/armoured crew compartment never fails to kill off at least 1 squad before exploding spectacularly and vaporising even more nearby troops!

cheers!

Cadian all the way. Whats not to like about heavy .50 cal autocannons? They can take out MEQs, infantry, and light vehicles.

I go for a squadron of three Mars pattern, all with Hunter-Killer missiles and sometimes extra armour.

you'll need to check with your store staff as to how recently they got the boxes (more than two/three years and should ask to check before buying), but the mars pattern box is meant to include the catachan pattern upgrade frame as well.

Yea this is one of those questions that has puzzled gamers for years

Armageddon Patter- Too expesives for a Sentinel (KEEP them CHEAP) their armour 10 can easily be penetrated

Catachan Patteran- These are fine but only if your deep striking them in where they can get up close without being exposed to the enemy for long (I use that)

Cadian Pattern- Well if you figure it out the Str. of an autocannon (7) is the exact same thing as a Str of a Multilaser (6) For when you roll against a Space Marine army you need 2 not matter what. And since neither are AP 3 they always get their armour save. So for the sake of argument you get the same thing but more expensive compared to the Mars Pattern. And 9 times out of 10 you will me fighting a SME.

Mars Pattern- (same as top.) its the cheapest and 3 shots not too bad

armageddon patterns do have their uses, they just rely on being deployed smartly and the enemy having other things to shoot at. the lascannon has enough range to not need close proximity to be effective, so hide them at the back of your lines, maybe behind a russ to cut down the ammount of fire they recieve and snipe at the other sides tanks. the ability to move and fire a lascannon is enough to justify their cost imo.

I have used cadian in my past two games, they were popped by round 2 in both games; so I am thinking about dropping them all together as a waste of points.

keep them back away from most of the enemy's guns. with a 48" range, you have a much longer reach...

sentinels are ace for things like hiding in your deployment zone so as to always contest it, or else as cheap platforms for that improved coms upgrade!
just don't try and use it as you would say, a space marine dreadnought! it's not ment to take alot of enemy punishment, but it's still dead usefull. for example, by giving it the armoured crew compartment upgrade, you can keep a unit of assault marines tied-up for quite a while as they'll need 6's to glance you! (using melta bombs is risky for them as they'll cause a tonne of penetrating hits meaning there's a high chance they'll blow themselves up along with your sentinel!)

cheers!

I like the Steel Legion and Cadian Patterns as they bring a good deal of firepower to the field that can support infantry. But my favorite is my custom Krieg Pattern which has heavy stubbers and a grenade launcher for clearing trenches. designed it for apocalypse and I think Krieg would have their own type anyway.

have you seen the forgeworld sentinel w/multiple rocket launcher yet?! it's rather tasty to have a full squad that's capable of throwing out upto 6 blast markers each shooting phase!

cheers!

i'm thinking about gettin the sentinel recon datasheet for apoc games and toolin them all up with lascannons or multi lasers and HKs for titan huntin. the mars patterns let off the missiles to knock out the void shields and the armaggeddons go in for the kill.

would that work ya reckon?

In my honest opinion Kenshin620, None of them, I brought a Forge World Sentinel a while ago, and so far, it has won me many a game.
It is armed with a Multi-Melta =]

that seems a rather expensive and fragile way to field a weapon that only really comes into its own at 12" and can be taken out by a bolter iirc.

not to mention the $/£ cost to purchase something that you can only use if your opponent agrees

I am includung a squad in the 93rd...may include more than one...but have decided to mix em up in each squad rather than stick to just one type...besides the best thing for em is like Stitch suggested...keep em back to contest yer DZ and use em to fight off flanking units...and keep yer arty safe
