Default whos in which squad

alright my fellow guardsmen.

we have all had this scenario occur to us.

its well into the third turn and all your squads are too close to each other. you have begun to loose track of where one squad starts and where one ends.

how have you begun to be able to tell one squad from the other.

i have just now painted the left shoulder pad a different color for every squad

colour coded sholderpads are a good way to tell squads apart, numbering works well too. the only problem i find is that if you wan't to mix up your army comp between one game and the next you'll wind up with different colours/numbers in the same squad. i suppose its alright if its a tournie list that doesn't change but for friendly games it can be a bit of a pain.

I know of some people that put names on the backs of each base-Smith, Jones etc and when they write the army list they note who is in each squad

These guys know there armies though and could tell you a troopers name just by looking at him...!

Yeah I've set myself to marking 6 guardsman per squad. This gives you the ability to change your sergeant, special, and heavy teams up and you can still keep a good eye on your squads. It is less to remember than the usual memory game where i keep track of how many my opponent killed in each squad and telling him while gesticulating in general areas.

i had this problem for a while with my guard and ork armies i partially solved it by using stickers on the base just little sticker that i cut into small squares and stuck them on the base buy #'s one squad has 2 red and 1 green
that sort of thing works great and its not permanant you can change it easily by just peeling them off

I know what you mean with the cheapos
they fall off of platic bases easily but still stick very well to skin

well i truely only play my guard on tournaments as they are my proven best. game nights im usually trying the new army of the week. and besides if i do change them later i can just repaint the squads shoulder pad.

ive seen some great ideas out here. lets keep them coming

I just paint the sides of the bases differently easy to reapint over and it could be just a stripe.

i know this is a different armoy, but for my SM i use roman numerals on the right shoulderpad's front corner. it looks really uniform that way and i intend to do that for all my army :]

on a side note, that sticker idea is ingenious :]

I began numbering on the back of the base with:
"1/2"

as in: 1st squad / 2nd Platoon
