Default Weekend Challenge 6 - Object Source Lighting

This Week You get the task of displaying a rather dificult technique.

OBJECT SOURCE LIGHTING

Do your best!

PLEASE TAKE A PICTURE OF YOUR STARTING BITS AND THIS POST AS PROOF OF START TIME!

Entries will be accepted until noon GMT Monday at which time voting will start.

Good luck to everyone.

AND FOR THOSE WHO DONT KNOW

that is one of the best OSL examples that i have found. it was painted by Gray Matter Musings, and the pic is used w/o permission. no copyright infringement intended.

Basically show where light from an object in the sculpt goes.

This is one technique I have only attempted once (didnt come out too good). I always wanted to learn the basics of this. There are a few site which show you step by step. I will try to dig up the addys so you can all benefit from the tutorials.
I will not be around this weekend for this one.

Good luck to you all. I am really interested in seeing this one for sure.

Here is the link.

I hope this helps you all in your efforts.

im so in this one... though question:

can we use an already painted model and then add source lighting? since painting a whole model in a few days is a bit harsh

Does the whole model have to be painted OSL.. Or can it be the light given off by a powersword or internal suit mechanics>>example from pic below( green light around face). Oh, by the way, its my favorite/future conversion of a Serker Lord.

Default Re: Weekend Challenge 6 - Object Source Lighting

Remember not to confuse the different types of lighting effects.
Here are some definitions of a couple of types which can be confusing.

Object source lighting: This is where some part of the model is the source of the light. This can be a weapon, torch, artifact or some other sculpted detail.

Base source lighting: This is where some part of the base is causing the light. This can be a fire, lava, or some additional base detail. For the most part this technique sees a dramatic sense of under lighting on the model that is standing on the base.

Environmental source lighting: This technique utilizes the natural sense of highlighting that an artist uses but to an exaggerated degree. Most of the time when a model is highlighted a source of light is chosen, this 'day light' is where you highlight from. In some cases this lighting is done as if the source of light is washing out the natural colours vs giving them natural depth.

Not sure where Steve is, all will be fine I'm sure. Lets look at it as the best lit up mini with paint! That's the spirit of the challenge! I'm looking foward to the results of this!!

OSL is just what i know it as, though environmental source seems a lot like normal painting in my mind.

Correct me if I'm wrong.
I think the effect you are looking for is a light source coming from the piece itself.
Examples: Power sword, Lava, a Lamp, the glow off a plasma cannon coil, etc ...

The picture example you showed was OSL

you are correct, basically something that a mini is holding or is is puting off light.

Sorry guys I'll be out of town this weekend so I'm out on this one but good luck, as when I've tried this it turned out absolutly terrible.

Good luck to all you brave enough/skilled enough to pull it off.

the more i think about this the more i worry i wouldnt be able to finish in time. personally i feel this is too much for a slow painter like me to get done in just a few days (made worse by the fact that i work full days on sundays).

ill do my best, but as much as i hate to, si think ill have to pull a yahoo this week

Would there be any way that this comp could take up a full weeks worth of time, as it is a challenging but intriguing challenge. If this were given more time, I think the final results would be very rewarding and there would be more entrants. We could have up until next monday to finish this comp.

Just a suggestion, because I have a great idea, but I would need more time to see if I could pull it off. I would also like to see the previous posters that can't participate, have the chance to do so.

I can give you until next monday, BUT there will be another weekend comp for next weekend to run concurrent, but i'll make it an easy one so that it is relatively simple to do both if you want.

Happy?
