well, first things first; get yourself a guard codex!

if you can still get your mits on some of those apocalypse deals, then i'd say go for perhaps the russ squadron set, or if you can aford it, the emperor's (re: warmaster's!) fist tank company. 10 russes for only $350(can) as compared to $550 if you buy 'em all individually... that's basically most of an armoured company right there!

failing that, get a cadian or catachan battleforce and perhaps some chaos spawn to add a bunch of mutatios to your traitors...

cheers!

Well, I need a name and some background for my Traitors. Anyone have ideals? What about paint scheme? I'm also thinking of getting some FW Renegade Militia. Any thoughts?

I suck at naming stuff, but I know that the FW Renegades are some of the coolest models they've made. Maybe your army could have started with a small Chaos cell, which then tainted the rest of the population. When the original cells' masters saw what they had accomplished, they gifted them.

Hey, that's not a bad ideal for the background. Now I'll have to flesh it out a bit. Or maybe I can get some of the local fluffmonkeys to do it for me. Any takers?

Well, it will probably be awhile before I actually start building them, so there is no rush. It doesn't have to be a massive amount of fluff, but if you can somehow tie them into Black Legion.

Hmm.. Getting the idea of Cadian Guardsman who were supposedly/officially 'killed in action' but in reality were really traitors whose betrayal allowed the 13th Black Crusade to succeed so?

Sounds good to me. Only problem is I got 1 squad of Cadians and 1 of Catachans. Shouldn't be too much of a problemo, however. If need be I'll just get some more Cadians.

Not needed! Just mix in the catachans evenly! they can be the more corrupted ones who have fallen further to Chaos!

Hmmm.. Vampire Count horses would work nicely, and the VC style Blood Dragons armor. Something dead/rotting looking for the horse.

Any ideals for HQ choices? I'd really like to have a Commisar.

Would anyone like to give me around a 2,500 point list for Traitor Guard?

well, you MUST! have 1 command platoon. commissars are classed as 'advisors'. again, the first thing to really do is get the guard codex because it's easily the most confusing army in terms of organisation!
also, the inclusion of doctrines means you can tailor your force for pretty much any style of play you can imagine... so you can have anything really, from say a hoard of nutters who charge forwards to a heavy infantry force to a gunline.

as for your background, here's a few basic questions to ask yourself;
a) the regiment's name obviously!
think about something predatory and/or agressive in nature. ie: the 23rd styixian death brigade

b) who they are? where originally zealously loyal adherants to the imperial cult who were slowly led astray by an emissary of the dark gods, or were they perhaps a feral regiment who's ancient cerimonies of initiation/worship really a form of chaos worship?!

c) how do they opperate? are they silent & stealthy killers who take perverse pleasure in the terror they sow amongst isolated pockets of imperial defense lines, or are they perhaps shock assault troops who specialise in breaking through enemy formations?

d) what power do they worship? are they followers of chaos as a whole, or have they seccumed to the worship of a single god?

cheers!

or are they really renegades and not some regiment working for a radical inquisitor who are deep undercover trying to figure out how the black legion operates/ find a base or something?

Ok, I gotta get the dex soon, your right Stitch. I'm still undecided on a name and background. Hey LC, what is the Latin translation of "death squadron"? I'm thinking they might operate like the Einsatzgruppen on the Eastern Front during WW2. Not really regular army, but operating close behind them, following behind the main attack to destroy villages and towns, focusing more on the population than military targets. I know this is a little politically incorrect, but I'm not condoning anything the Nazis did, just looking back in history for some terror troops. I hope noone here takes offense.

don't worry about that kind of a theme - it's actually quite in character for a traitor force to pick on the poor, defenseless masses!

as long as you simply avoid using any overtly nazi iconography, you'll be fine. alot of guard players for example love to paint their tanks in actual german WWII markings and cammo - they simply omit the one or two 'bad' symbols...
and if someone does try and be a prat about it, just remind them that the imperial aquila does somewhat resemble the nazi party's eagle standard! not to mention that the imperium they worship is itself a fascist empire who convert or kill anyone who doesn't toe the line!!!

and yes, i do indeed point out those points to people who argue you can't/shouldn't paint anything WWII german!

cheers!

Yeah, I'll avoid the swastikas Stitch. Not even sure that they will have a German style camo scheme. No Iron Crosses either. Actually, the only thing I will probably use is field-gray uniforms, but not sure.
