Default 5th rumor:starter kit and new SM list

Okay I was at a local GW (haven't been there in a loooong time) and I heard cool (although unfounded) rumor that 5th is going to be a lot like 3rd in the sense that-

The starter kit is going to come with space marines and Dark Eldar,Only this time Both factions will come with a "light" vehicle, both new types.

There will be a booklet containing how the rules revamp will effect current codexes (all of them) and will contain the rules for all "basic" units.(the example given to me was that the guard entry will will have the rules for the leman russ but will have "see codex imperial guard" under the baneblade and demolisher listings. All units will be listed but the rules that don't come free will just say "see codex ______" below it's title.this is to encourage people to start small armies aside from their main one who would otherwise put it off. This is kind of like how the 3rd book had listings)

Some forgeworld tech will be recognized again like how the vanquisher was in the 3rd codex.

Also-

All the land raider variants will be listed and there will be a Armored company-type list that will contain land raiders and terminators. Also terminators carry more weapons like plasma cannons and omit "gets hot" due to their suit.

Pretty outlandish considering GW leaked the fact it would be SM & Orks months ago. Sorry there mate.

Some of it sounds true, but given we're just now seeing GS concept models, DE are about a year off, minimum.

yeah, last i heard the box was rumoured to be orks and marines, with a number of models more similar to that in the BoSK starter box, with plastic dread, killer can, grots, orks, warboss etc

That rumor was confirmed a while back, but date and source do escape me at the moment.

Plus, DE is just ridiculously still down the pipeline.

We're just NOW seeing CONCEPT models, so they've got a while (as I said before I think).

All in all, there are a few nuggets that sound plausible. The armored spearhead style Termie bit is 50/50 i'd say, and the light vehicle bit seems so as well, as do thigns like condensing predator/landraider/landspeeder entries to one single thing.

However, the new vehicle bit is off the wall... The 'forgeworld tech recognize again' is also far fetched and not very plausible.

It sounds like someone put together a few rumors from different sources, sprinkled their own thoughts in it, and served up a nice and messy soup sandwich of rumors!

Terminators with Plasma Cannon? Sounds cool, but I'm not changing mine again, I've almost got them built! Chaos probably wouldn't get them anyway.

I've also heard SM and Orks though the terminator weapons would be very cool and makes you wonder why they dont have more special weapons.

Especially Chaos termies. We only get the Reaper AC (which is pretty good, though I would like Assault Cannons) and the Heavy Flamer (good against swarms of weak-armoured foes, but short range). Then again, Obilts carry a huge arsenal. I'd love to see Chaos Termies able to use Cyclones.

chaos will never get the assault cannon...

keep in mind, the assault cannon, cyclone rocket launcher and similar were just begining their trial phase during the heresy! it wasn't untill years/decades after the siege of terra that the techmarines finally worked all the bugs out of the things!
the traitor legions didn't have the equipment in vast numbers, nor the ability to repair and upkeep such advanced tech after they fled terra.

besides, chaos gets plenty of other goodies like those oblits & better pintle-weapon up-grades.

finally, keep in mind that rending itself is really going to be nerfed vs vehicles in general. (only +D3 instead of +D6 armour pen.) so all those dumb/jerky ass-can 'o doom lists are going to end up in the bin... (especially considering termies & speeder squads won't be able to take nearly as many in the new codex...)

cheers!

Thank god!!! I hated the rending rules. I always thought they were unbalanced.

If you dont think they are unbalanced I have 2 words "Death Company"

When you can get about 30 attacks out of a squad with rending. Add a chaplin giving rerolls on all misses in the first round (thus giving another chance to roll 6s)

and that is just one example of rending being abused, broken, whatever term you wish to use.

Now dont get me started on Nids ...

The preceding rant is the product of many battles against rending heavy lists.

Nids aren't broken. Genestealers are pretty Balanced, IMO.

The Broodlord... not sure how he is fair, but its only one model that can be taken down with a fair bit of firepower.

However, all the other stuff sounds very good. I like the new rumors.

Sadly... I'm gonna have to get a scanned copy of the rulebook or try and figure out how to ship it to myself... I'll probably end up playing with 4th ed. rules for a while.

rending vs vehicles in combat is pretty balanced as is... you typically need 4's to-hit, (if not 6's!) and then you need to roll that 6 for armour pen before yu even have a hope of denting most front line tanks!

vs infantry, meh. rending is supposed to nasty vs non-vehicle units. besides, rending is really all the 'nids have as far as anti-MEQ goes. (tyrants are fast enough to get into combat when they have wings, but they're far too important to risk a power fist to the face!)
'fexes are just too damn slow. so rending is the 'nids answer to very heavily armoured foes.

cheers!

Actually I can.

I mean, Battle for Skull Pass has like... 100 models? WH has more models than 40k, so I can see having about half that amount of models for a 40k starter set.

Besides, if GW can afford to sell 100+ models in a WFB (the smaller of the two games) and make a profit (I assume they are) then surely they can afford to sell 50ish models in a 40k box and make a bigger profit.

Besides, if GW can afford to sell 100+ models in a WFB (the smaller of the two games) and make a profit (I assume they are) then surely they can afford to sell 50ish models in a 40k box and make a bigger profit.
except that we don't make any kind of a profit off the the skull pass or lotr sets...
hell, skull pass alone is a consumer savings of $265(can)!!! the macragge box is a pretty lame deal actually - only about $80-100 or so...
