fantasy dying - 40K Terra

fantasy needs help. therefore as a gamer i belive it is my duty to bring to light the interesting revalations from bugmans.

do whatever you can to stir up intrest if possible. i don't want this game to die.

Don't worry there is no dieing of Fantasy right now. This was started by someone who doesn't have an active fantasy community in his area. My group only plays fantasy, other than me who plays everything.

LotR might eventually be removed. For Fantasy to be removed though GW would have to be finished. This we all know might be because they didn't remove LotR at the right time. This is nothing against the game but the financial aspect of licensing has been a profit killer for GW in recent years. That and over expansion but they are fixing that problem atleast.

In Southern California, we have our largest local league:

Fantasy: 70 players
40k: 30 players.

So Fantasy dieing out???

My local store (which I have yet to play a game at) has 40k night on mondays. Fantasy night is Fridays and Saturdays. So yeah fantasy wins there I guess. I need to stop working monday nights!

Yea, most of the guys at my place play fantasy. Hell I even go to a fantasy forum (Even withought an army) and they have over thousands of members. If theres one hing thats dying it has to be LOTR. I mean at my store, gundams have more shelf space than them.

Fantasy is definately not dying. There's a massive fantasy following in Kilkenny city.
LOTR is screwed. The local stockist is trying to push them at about 50% the recommended price but no one's buying it anymore.
The owner has started opening the boxes and practicing his painting when the place is quite.

I was going to say that at the GW I hang around at (I honestly need to play more, I just like building even more then that) there seems to be about a 45-50ish% split between fantasy and 40k with one LOtR game going on. So I don't think they are in trouble as far as people liking fantasy.

In Pueblo Colorado, noone ever plays any games of fantasy anymore (we had a giant campaign with like 30 players (yes giant for my mind) and it left some of us having like 12 battles a month! So the game died down as a lot of people got burnt out! Personally I love the game, but I can vouch that there are still tons of people who have armies, just no interest in playing!

Because it was a mistake? Furthermore, its a costly mistake.

For the record, I think the idea of a table top game based on Lord of the Rings is cool (I love Lord of the Rings!) but sadly... the game didn't do so well and is now nothing more dead weight for GW.

Exactly. While some may think that MMORPGs and video games in general are bad for Table Top games... its only thanks to Dawn of War that I even knew that Warhammer 40,000 existed in the first place!

As far as I'm concerned, Games workshop need to make more video games, books, and non-table top stuff if it wants to exist in this day-and-age. If everyone who plays Dawn of War gets to know a little about the table top game, that means that there is always the chance the GW will get new players, maximizing its profits.

No one has bashed on the LotR game system here just the licensing agreement that has seen GW lose a ton of money. As a game system I love the fact that everyone moves individually but tactically you have to stay in formations. The coolest thing is though that you get to chose the formations. Fantasy is just a couple of blocks. In LotR I can field a wedge formation and the wedge might collapse over the course of a few turns and then I have to adjust my formation. You can actually mimic a very realistic battle and battlefield tactics of ancient warfare. OK, sometimes there is a troll there which kind of ruins the realism but you know what I mean.

and now they've gone an added in thier own units and characters (the named ringwraiths come to mind) that totally mess up the view of lotr. don't get me wrong, i've read the trilogy four times and i love it, its just sad what thier doing to it...

you mean its sad for them to use the actual book?
they own the liscense
and are inspired not by the decent movie production
but the perfect vision that tolkein put into writing
it would never be sad or wrong for them to use elements
that didnt appear in Jacksons's vision
but did appear in the original text.

if you read it 4 times you should appreciate what they are doing

Fantasy won't die, if all of what these people say is true. However, LotR.... They'll scrap it. I found it fun for a while but there's just not enough profit in it for GW to continue with it.
