Default Campaign Ideas

I have organized and ran campaigns in the past, some have been successful, some have not. I have read the books, I know the game, what I want to know is “what are some of the better campaigns you have participated in and why?”
If it is cause your army kicked arse and was totally unstoppable then I don’t really want to know. And any one can run a “tree” campaign… what I want to know it what elements of the campaign were especially enjoyable or (if you were on the loosing end) significant? What types of campaigns to like the most?

well me and some friends all really like dan abnet 40k books, and so we orginized some basic missions and things about 'first and only' were me with my space marines and an imperial guard player had to do certain missions and kill teams that sort of followed the story, but of course we had to change it due to availible armies. dont be afraid to make up your own scenarios that everyone agrees on because these add to the overall storyline.

Ah yes Campaigns, I love them or hate them it all depends. I ran a few myself, and currently running one now. However my all time favorite had to be the Vogen Cityfight one.

I participated in the same one as Steellegioncpt, and I have to say it was cool. However, there were far too many participants. I ran a campaign based on that, except with fewer people. I put a lot of background into it, and since the people I game with are not quite as much into the fluff as I am, that part was more or less ignored. However, I did make a miniature for the winner. It ended up that there was an Eldar webway portal on this corrupted world, which was where Arhra, the Fallen Pheonix Lord was hiding.

Overall, it went pretty well. Individual pins represented territories a player had taken, and each territory counted for so many points. However, a player had a certain number of "banners" that represented actual troops that could move around, and only banners fought, not banner v. territory. Every three territories gained a player a banner.

I ended up taking most of my force out and just had a small contingent to cause trouble among the players because then they could get more games in, and I wasn't doing too well anyway, and I let my brother take my territories to let him play, too. Plus, that was part of the storyline.

I think everyone involved enjoyed themselves. Steellegioncpt can either vouch for, or deny this, as he was a participant.

I have not found the opportunity, or people willing, but I think a kill-team campaign would be fantastic! I've recently read several Gaunt's Ghosts novels, and the 2nd Ultramarines novel with Uriel Ventris (where he leads a Deathwatch Kill-team into a hive ship). They always have great action and lots of suspense and so forth.

There are also lots of good ideas the 4th Ed. Warhammer 40k rulebook.

Kill teams are alot of fun, I forced some of my buddies to put some together, they are short games and very interesting. they make great fillers when you don't have enough time to play a big game (a game or two with kill teams can last as short as 20 mins)

I know the Main book has alot of good ideas and I plan on incorporating many into a large campaign, i guess what i really want to know is what is it in campaigns that makes them enjoyable to you as opposed to normal ternements/one offs.

For me, I think it's a good story line, as well as being able to manage troops like a game of Risk, except that you actually fight the battles!

But I think a good backstory really makes it enjoyable.

True, but for me the exciting-ness of the work well made up for it. I did spend a couple nights up kinda late to get the reports, story progression, and models painted in time.

I've talked a little bit about this in another post, but my favorite campaign is the last one me and some buddies did revolving around Cities of death.

We started at 250 pts, and built up by that many points per game till we hit 2000. Each game you would record what units did what in a kind of battle report, and depending on the mission, you were given experience points to certain squads. Later in the campaign you could trade them in for specialty skills and upgrades that made your "elite vetrans" actually stand out a little bit.

I went so far as to paint the bases of my men to illustrate what medals they'd earned and promotions awarded in the way of purity seals. (which actually look cool on IG). This has given my army a lot more flair, and I've enjoyed playing with it a lot more. This also created a kind of side objective in most games that was to kill certain units that were getting too powerful. Putting bounties on characters is a lot of fun and an easy way to earn extra XP for your own squads.

Even the games you lost, you actually won something (provided some of your troops survived). This coupled with each battle giving your overall army a bonus was great. None of the players knew what each territory did until we fought over it or annexed it. Sometimes it was detrimental, so there was a lot of chance involved by those overly aggressive players. And nothing is more satisfying than seeing that Ork player capture the missile battery that gave him a free orbital bombardment... Good times.

All people interested in a campaign should go here to discuss. I will leave this thread open, but if you're interested in a 40k Terra campaign, please post on this thread:
