| Are GK heroes independent characters? Because, if they are, then the Brother-Captain is useless. I was reading in my DH Codex, and I came across this line: Independent Character: Unless accompanied by his retinue (see below) the Grey Knight Hero is an independent character... If the retinue is destroyed, the Grey Knight Hero becomes and independent character... So, my interpentation of this rule is: The GK hero is only a independent character if he doesn't have a retinue. However, this makes the Grand Master a lot more powerful. However, should it mean that the GK hero IS an independent character (I'm not sure if it is saying this), then the Brother-Captain is next to unless and should never be taken.

| BUT, if your not going to take any tanks (Land Raiders, LRCs, Dreadnoughts), then why take a GK Brother-Captain as a hero, when instead you can take one, that is NOT an independent character, as an elite choice instead... taking a cheap inquisitor for your HQ.

| nope, both the grandmaster and the brother captain are most definately IC's wether they take a retinue or not! keep in mind that the daemonhunter 'dex was writen back in 3rd edition. the reference to 'no longer an independant character' was to stop him from leaving his retinue! (especially if it looked like the retinue was about to get thrashed!) in the 4th edition rules, if a model has a IC rule then it is always an IC for the purposes of assaults and such... if the retinue is wiped out, then the hero can simply join/leave other squads at will. cheers!
