Help with assault

Hi,

Just a quick question that seems to crop up all the time. Say my Ogryns are fighting both necron warriors and Wraiths in a assault. The Ogryns win their combat with the warriors but lose against the Wraiths. Normally if just fighting the warriors they would roll for morale and I would try a sweeping advance but if engaged with other models how does that work, do the warriors and Ogryns roll for morale etc... who goes first etc...? Pg 45 of big rulebook says all units of losing side check morale but in my example the Wraiths won their part of the combat? What we do at the minute is just say the combat is locked until one side has killed all enemy models but know this is not right.

I am sure there is a simple explanation but can't get my head around it.

I think that you have to roll for each one that lost so the Ogryns and the warriors have to do a moral test.For the swaaping advance i think it just goes as normal but you are still in combat after. I hope that answered your question.

Ok, so here's how it goes down:
When it says check for the side that lost, and not the individual units, that means you count up enemy models lost per side. The losing side then takes morale checks. For example:

You Ogryns eliminate 5 warriors and no wraiths. The warriors kill 1 Ogryns and the wraiths kill 3. The Wraiths and Warriors must take morale checks because the Ogryns killed 5 models and the Necrons (combined) killed only 4 models, so each unit on the Necron side must make a morale check for losing combat on the whole.

It's like if you saw the unit next to you get torn apart. Even though you may kill some, you'd still be a little shaken by your comrades' deaths.

To clarify, the above example would be if your ogryns were down to 1 wound a piece before combat started. If they were unwounded, 4 models would be like 12 wounds and they would have lost :P

Does it go by wounds or models? I thought it was models... but wounds would actually make more sense, come to think of it.

Whoever inflicts the most wounds wins the combat.

so each side wouldve done it, not squad

but if the ogryns had won, both nec squads would take a moral check, but the ogryns could only sweeping advace massacre one squad (right?)

What would happen if say Ogryns were up against Warriors and a fearless unit like scarabs? Will they still have to take a morale test if Warriors lose combat as described earlier?

Nope. All units on one side count for that side, not individually. So if the Necrons loose the assault, then the warriors make a morale check and the scarabs stay put.

also keeping in mind that if the scarabs are outnumbered, then they will take extra wounds as they are 'fearless'!
so for example, if our combat involves say;
10 ogryns vs. 4 warriors & 1 scarab base, the scarabs would be outnumbered 2:1 and thus would take 1 additional armour save!
