Easy.

Lets take the good ol' Stormtroopers from the Imperial Guard.

Okay, you have 10 stormtroopers and there are 20 orks a bit aways but you dont know if they are in range or not. You think they are but you just arent sure.

Then you use your targeters to measure the range.
Whoops, they are 26" inches away...
Luckily there are 10 grots that are within 16"

Since the targeters measure the range you get to fire at the grots rather then forfeiting your turn because you chose to shoot at the orks which were out of range.

It basicly lets you check range for free

Yes.

Don't worry, I didn't know this until I played a few times myself. And yes, it was when I realized that targeteers allow you check range.

normally you cannot pre-measure the distance between your unit and the enemy in the shooting phase. you must 1st delcare your chosen and then measure! (so if end up out of range, you waste your shooting!)

targeters allow you to pre-measure the range between your squad & any potential targets.
however, you must first fire all of your 'guess' weapons such as mortars & basiliks! (not that it's too important now, but back in 3rd edition you actually had to guess how far you'd fire these weapons!)

cheers!

Well you can elect not to fire them first
but it just means you won't fire them at all.

ah the joys of pre-measuring exactly how long my fore arm is and then using that piece of info to help my guessing. under handed? certainly. useful? not at all.

ain't the scatter dice vengefull?!!

anyways, you can pretty much ignore the bit about 'must fire guess range weapons first', because all those guns now shoot like any other gun. (ie: declare target, measure range, scatter.)

cheers!

or you can measure every "large gravel piece" or distance between terrain features before hand.
But THAT is underhanded.

plus it's likely you'd get an idea of how far diff enemies are away when you measure for guess range anyway, provided you're fairly good at spacial manipulation and the guess range weapon isnt too far from other units.

warrior henchmen (though some upgrades take it away)
