The Phrall - 40K Terra

Somewhat like the Matrix, and perhaps other things that influenced me subconsciously.

The Phrall were a land-dwelling, silicon-based race among the Ghoul Stars. Their Golden Age was only a century before that of the Necrontyr. Their technological prowess was only rivaled by the Necrontyr, and perhaps, had their technological march continued, they would have far surpassed the Necrontyr and Eldar. However, this Golden Age would not last long.

Engineers had built a vast data-system called the Network. More and more Phrall plugged into the Network. They used it to transport themselves, to communicate, and to make war with the hostile races they came across. Newer generations of Phrall plugged themselves in at earlier ages. Eventually, Phrall were born plugged in. The Network spanned across their entire empire, which stretched across the entire galaxy.

The Phrall were not a psychic race, but like humanity, they were still developing. The Phrall’s attitude of investigation and careful study brought new power but also grave danger to the Phrall. Daemons began to infest the newly-opened minds, and many Phrall were lost before the source of the raving, destructive mentality of the possessed Phrall was realized. They constructed psychic shields and forbid any Phrall from interacting with the Immaterium in any way. There were, of course, those who did not listen, and they were exiled from the Phrallian Empire so they would not contaminate the rest of the population. They became known as the Maulum, and they melded technology and the Warp to create deadly weapons. They became extremely secretive, and many said the powers of the Empyrean altered their minds.

But the powers of the Warp were not the most dangerous threat they would face. Not a decade after the Network’s completion, a great catastrophe occurred that would change the Phrall forever. From somewhere deep inside the Network’s core came a consciousness. The Glitch caught the Phrall totally unprepared. It broke through the protective cyber-walls and formed a parasitic relationship with all plugged-in Phrall, fighting for control of their very bodies.
Some Phrall had resisted the move to become plugged-in, and sought a means to destroy the Glitch. They decided to destroy the core of the Network. With the help of their kin trapped in the Network, the free Phrall destroyed the core. But the cataclysmic explosion destroyed their home planet, as well. As it broke apart, the trapped Phrall realized that their mortal bodies would soon perish because of the Glitch’s parasitic half-control.

So they abandoned their flesh and became Network entities. They then transferred their consciousness across the Network to factories, harvesters, and war-machines. Over time, they found a way to spawn new entities within the Network. Thus they were able to continue their race. But the process was lengthy, and thus their numbers remained few as old Network entities wore out their cybernetic life.

After the Glitch, the Phrall leaders led an Exodus beyond the known galaxy. They conquered, pushing aside lesser races, and fending off all those who wished to conquer their realm. Billions of years later, the leaders of the Exodus, now Ancients, deemed it time to return to their home galaxy. They would return to start anew in what they thought was a blooming, but sentient-devoid galaxy. What they found was much different. They found a galaxy in a constant state of war. Their galaxy. Their home. The Ancients rallied their warriors, even the Maulum, called for war, and the March began.

The Maulum created several tomes that held in it all their combined knowledge of the Warp and its workings. These were no ordinary books: their pages were not filled with words, but rather runes by which the reader could access the Network the Maulum built in the Warp and learn the knowledge the Maulum had gathered. Only the most senior Phrall within the Maulum possessed copies of the books. But some books were lost when senior Maulum came under attack from younger Maulum seeking knowledge about the Warp. Some books were lost…

… and found.

Thoughts? Too unoriginal? Too unfitting with 40k? Too unfeasible?

Probably just my eyes, been working a lot on a secret project.

Now that I read it, I think it is nice. I would change Exilites to something else, as it is cumbersome on the tongue/innenr voice, but thats just me.

What about the Maulum (may-ool-um)? From "Malus" which means "evil" in Latin. Easier on the tongue?

I like it...a bit short in the tooth, but then again direct and not too divulgent...they are a mystery after all, if I am reading it correctly...

That you are.

It seemed a lot longer when I wrote it because I used old-fashioned paper and pencil, and tried a new font. It was as much a story-creating exercise as a printing exercise.

But yes, mysterious.

lol! well there is a race in 40k called f'raal (often f'raal raiders) i dunno if youre basing these on them (there close to nothing written about them that i know of).

Nope, never heard of them.

Crap! Well, we'll just say GW spelled it wrong, and that now there is information about them...

i think the 3rd edition rulebook wher eit mentions kroots etc or some random piece of fluff scattered in the alien sections of 1-4 edition rulebooks

Y'know, I saw the 3rd Edition book not too long ago, and I know what page you're talking about. I seem to remember something like f'raal...

Thanks! That's exactly what I thought when I thought of it. I know I did before I saw the 3rd Ed. Codex anyway.

Things spelled with "ph", "x", "z", usually sound pretty cool. It perhaps a little cliche. Does the story sound ok?

Hmm I like it. I'm sorry I didn't look at this post before I wrote that bit in the New Alien Army post. I had my mind on large multi-legged robots for a second but I wasn't sure if it was too main stream Sci-fi. It's not like GW isn't just one big ripoff anyway. I think I'd like it. Large fast close combat machines with multiple wounds. When I think about it there is a deviation from most things you'll encounter in 40k.

That's what I was hoping for: you will be more outnumbered than even Grey Knights, but you wil stay alive and hit hard!

Here's the basic statline I thought of:

So they're not huge stat-wise, but they would have a thing that would make it harder to auto-kill them so Railguns and Demolisher Cannons can't drop lots in a turn.

I like the stat line but I don't think that they should be immune to autokill. If it's a railgun it's a railgun. I need more of your image but I think that fleet would fit in with these guys and i think even with that 40 points should be ok.

I guess there probably wouldn't be an ungodly number of S10 stuff anyway... good point.

Fleet would be cool. I didn't have it because I made ranged weapons for them, but if all those are removed, then yeah.

Yeah so after seeing your weapons list my imagination is in a whole different part of the warp than yours. Can you give me a good description of the bodies of these guys. I have a couple of good ideas running in my head right now though. Also I have alot of free time and no cool hobby projects. This is beginning to peak my interest.
