Default Buildings!

Well, my gf is making me some buildings for cityfighting and I wanted to share! Only one is fully done but it looks great and I can't wait to use it! She just used styrofoam boards I brought home from work (FREE!) some toothpicks and a woodburning tool. Then just spraypainted them with that stone texture spray stuff and painted some highlights. Cheap and very fast!

Enjoy!

I hope she was in a well ventilated area with that woodburning tool on the styrofoam. Wouldn't want to see a cool chick like that getting "black lung" I know that is a coal miner's thing but what would a hobbyists death by styrofoam be called.

Yeah, she was outside :P We always work on that kind of thing outside (spraypainting too) as we have a parrot in the house and they have sensative respitory systems.

Yup, polystyrene (styrofoam to us yanks). She has 2 others made and spraypainted, she just needs to paint them. I'd say it took her maybe and hour or so of work (the spraypaint takes 5 hours to dry though). Here's a pic of the spraypainted ones before they're painted

Also, what should I use for bases?

Those buildings are sweet, nice work. As for the bases I would just stick them on a square MDF board or something nice and thin. It looks like it's fine free standing, but once you got a squad of conscripts on there you're gonna need support.

Yeah MDF or as it's commonly reffered to Masonite or Hardboard (the stuff clip boards are made of)...I use it on hills and tree stands...Home Depot or Lowes...any kinda home improvement place will have it in 1/16th or 1/8th thickness...a pain to cut (double score it with a sharp utility knife on both sides and it 'snaps' off then you gotta clean up the edges) but it doesn't warp from the glue...and you can shape the edges with a rasp...great stuff

They make a spray acrylic that is waterbased that won't eat the foam...or you can coat it with a base of watered down PVA...but you gotta make sure you get EVERY millimeter of it or the paint will find it's way in...

Well, spraypaint was probably bad wording on my part. I should have said spray on finish. I used a stone textured finish I got at the hardware store that sprays on. She then used acrylic paints on top of that.

This is the finish I used and it didn't melt the foam.

I got it at home depot but I've seen it in craft stores too. I know I've seen it in Beverly's and Michael's.

they look awesome. but what did she use the woodburning tool for ? i'm worried cause styrofoam might emit poisonous fumes when heated..

you'll maybe want to check in with like somebody at home depot or something whenever you apply stuff to foam, cause it's pretty vulnerable when it comes to chemicals. just to be safe, you know ? :]

mm but anyways, just wanted to check in on that. they do look awesome :] and what's better than free styrofoam ? free styrofoam that somebody you care about makes into buildings :]

there's no might about it! it does emit poisonous fumes. i know this because i'm a bit gung ho when it comes to warnings and personal safety and rarely even bother to open a window when modelling, a fact that has resulted in some titanic headaches and nearly passing out a couple of times.

you'd have thought i'd have learnt by now...

AH! so we have someone who actually knows. i only remember vaguely reading something about it emitting poisonous fumes. you might instead try just cutting it ? it's not nearly as good looking but significantly safer :]

hmm question: why is the small battery powered foam cutter safe then ? IS IT SAFE AT ALL?!?!? haha :]
